Renfield's Syndrome EP reviewed by Virus! Magazi... Wednesday,Dec 20 2006, 07:12:10 PM
| US based Third Realm aka Nathan Reiner (lead vocals, drum
programming, synthesizer work) and Devi Gottschlich (backing vocals)
present us a debut EP that escorts us into a field where dark
wave/gothic and electro/industrial have liaised very well.
The
EP starts with "Forsaken", a track that serves elegantly tapping beats,
a mystic but smooth atmosphere and sci-fi-driven synth carpets.
Nathan's emotional, only slightly distorted vocals squire the piece
very well, as does the sexy background voice by Devi.
"Destiny"
begins with some voice samples and then turns into a dark electro wave
creation wherein some future pop splinters are guests. Nathan's clean
vocal delivery is very suitable for the airy pulsating modern beats.
"Medicated Machine" is next, serving vibrant rhythms and a quite catchy
chorus. Devi's partly repeat of the word 'machine' adds some extra
power to this overall vivifying piece.
The title track is a
very groovy midtempo adventure with relaxed effervescing sounds,
combining both Nathan's and Devi's vox equally. This interaction
between Nathan's kinda subcooled way of singing (sounding a bit like
David Thrussell of Snog in this song) and Devi's feelingly, somehow
erotic showcase adds a suspenseful flavour to this song. The
journey ends with the gentle, floating and thoughtful repast "The Ghost
Of Eva Braun" which includes melancholic vocals, triphop-like rhythms
and some notable sweet melodic synth spots.
When your CD
shelf holds discs from artists such as Forma Tadre, Cleen, system syn,
Diary Of Dreams, this EP will be a great addition. But everyone into
darker colored synth waves with various sounds and moods will enjoy the
tête à tête experience with this CD. Well done, a talented duo to watch out for!
