Itâ€™s been hard to find that drive that once lived within, everything seems so dark. Why is life so hard?? Can anyone answer me?? Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday donâ€™t forget that me I still love you guys!!  I just need to take time out and try and find that Brydon within again. I need to sit down and find out what  I want in life I once knew but now it just seems like I have lost the soul with in. <o:p /> I would really like those people that I am really close to, to stay in touch I canâ€™t do it with out you guys. If it werenâ€™t for you guys I wouldnâ€™t Know where I would be. Letâ€™s hope its up and up in 2008 <o:p> </o:p> I have that goal still to go to <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Boston</st1:place></st1:city> and do the marathon as I have told many of the people on here <o:p> </o:p> I am not going to let you guys down and walk away from the goal I set! Look out for me April 2008 if youâ€™re in <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Boston</st1:place></st1:city> and I still want to get that gold medal no matter what it takes Brysâ„¢ will give it his best shot <o:p> </o:p> Job wise for Brysâ„¢ 2008 unsure of yet what I want to be doing! I have a clothing label that I set up a few months ago, donâ€™t know where that is going to lead to, Also still doing the computer tech stuff!! So if any of you guys need any advice please donâ€™t hesitate to ask anything! The dictionary future wasnâ€™t working. <o:p>If you have any issues I have written this journal to help. It looks like in the new updates FireFox the dictionaries arenâ€™t   added in to the download exe.</o:p> These dictionaries work with the spell-checking feature in Firefox. You don't actually need it -- No, think about this. Vista doesn't do anything you can't already do with XP. About the only significant shift requiring Vista is DirextX10, but as no titles support it yet and, according to John Carmack (the godfather of modern gaming) there's <a href="http://www.dailytech.com/John+Carmack+Speaks+on+DX10+Vista+Xbox+360+PS3+Wii/article5665.htm">no need to yet</a> either. </h5> <h5>2. Cost $$ -- It's so blindingly obvious, most people will be blinded to it. You already have XP, and alternatives like Linux are free. If you really want to throw money away, go give it to a local charity.</h5> <h5>3. On that note, it's outrageously overpriced -- at least in Australia. As revealed in the current APC, even after taking into account the profit margin Microsoft Australia previously applied to XP (as well as exchange rates, as you would expect), Australians are paying hundreds of dollars more for their copies than in the US. In fact, it's cheaper for Australians to buy Vista direct by mail order from the States. If you think Microsoft Australia is reaming us, vote with your wallet. </h5> <h5>4. Upgrading hardware -- XP was demanding at release, but Vista more so. If you have an older machine that struggles with XP at the best of times, Vista is out of your ballpark unless you spend even more money to upgrade. If this is you, see point 1.</h5> <h5>5. Driver support -- Key hardware like video and sound is crippled at the moment -- while Nvidia is working furiously to get a stable driver for the 8800 <a href="http://www.slipperybrick.com/2007/01/where-are-the-nvidia-8800-vista-drivers/">out by the 30th</a>, there's still no SLI support for any of the Nvidia range. And thanks to the removal of hardware accelerated 3D sound in Vista, Creative's popular DirectSound based EAX <a href="http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=Vista&message.id=1694">no longer works at all</a>, muting this feature for just about all gaming titles on the market today. Creative is in the process of coding a layer for its drivers to translate EAX calls to the OpenAL API which is seperate from Vista, but going by past experience with Creative drivers we won't see these any time soon.</h5> <h5>6. Applications that don't work -- there's been plenty of coverage about applications that won't work without a vendor update. These include anti-virus, backup and security software such as those from <a href="http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/themes/vista/compatibility.jsp">Symantec</a>, <a href="http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/16071.html">Sophos</a> and ilk; CD and DVD burning tools like the <a href="http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/RN_details.html?Nero_Burning_ROM">suite from Nero</a> need updated versions to work; and even basic disk management and partitioning tools such as Paragon's Hard Disk Manager are <a href="http://www.paragon-software.com/hdm/home/personal/">awaiting an update</a> for Vista to be compatible. How many more will fail as Vista enters mainstream? Even Firefox has <a href="http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/2.0.0.1/releasenotes/#vista">issues with Vista</a>. </h5> <h5>7. It's a big fat target -- with a new and untested in the global wild architecture, virus and malware authors are going to work overtime exploiting the holes Microsoft missed. In fact <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2006/12/25/technology/microsoft_vista_flaws/index.htm?section=money_technology">it's already happening</a>. Loath though I am to use the word 'security' and 'Windows' in the same sentence, Windows XP has at least been patched to the hilt and can be used with a plethora of reasonably effective security tools that work now, without waiting for an update down the track.</h5> <h5>8. UAC -- Oh yes, the Microsoft solution for an operating system where mutli-user was an afterthought. Sure, you can disable it, but the OS then makes it clear then that the onus is on the user for any damaging programs that got to run with permissions, rather than with Windows in the first place. If you do have it on, it is going to annoy the hell out of you. It pops up far too frequently, and even on a fast PC, the UAC screen takes too long to come up and disappear. </h5> <h5>9. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Rights_Management">DRM</a> -- And to a lesser degree <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trusted_Computing">TPM</a> -- were made for the RIAAs and MPAAs of this world, and the even tighter integration of <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/12/27/windows_drm_monstered/">copy protection mechanisms</a> and 'Windows Rights Management' into vista are nothing more than a liability to you, the user. This <a href="http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=printArticleBasic&articleId=9005047">ComputerWorld piece</a> says is succinctly: 'it's hard to sing the praises of technology designed to make life harder for its users.' As for TPM, this short <a href="http://www.lafkon.net/tc/">animated video</a> shows just how far the rabbit hole goes. And to think you pay for the privilege of having the use of media you purchased and own dictated by third parties, even on your own system. </h5> <h5>10. The draconian license -- somehow, Microsoft has forgotten that it built its business from products that empowered its customers, not hampered them. Of course, we forget that Microsoft's customers aren't you and I, afterall (see point 9). Aside from the backward thinking that is licensing, and not actually owning, your software new terms with Vista include being able to transfer the license only once; half the limit compared to XP for Home Basic and Premium on how many machines can connect to yours for sharing, printing and accessing the Internet; limits on the number of devices that can use Vista's Media Center features; activation and validation governing your ability to upgrade hardware and use Windows itself; and outlawing the use of Home Basic and Premium with virtualisation software, and Ultimate only if DRM enabled content and applications aren't used. Both products were released to corporations almost two months ago, but wonâ€™t be officially launched to consumers until Jan. 29.<o:p /> But as early as mid-November, "cracked" copies of both products were <a target="_blank" href="http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9005108">available</a> via BitTorrent. As of mid-January, more than 100 individual copies of Office 2007 and more than 350 individual copies of Windows Vista were available on the service, according to BigChampagne LLC, a Los Angeles-based online media-tracking firm.<o:p /> The pirates that cracked early copies of <st1:place w:st="on">Vista</st1:place> all sidestepped Microsoftâ€™s latest antipiracy technology, the Software Protection Platform. "You canâ€™t build an encryption that canâ€™t be broken."<o:p /> Microsoft popular with pirates According to BayTSPâ€™s most recent figures from 2005, six out of the 25 most widely pirated software packages on <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bittorrent.com/">BitTorrent</a> and <a target="_blank" href="http://www.emule-project.net/">eDonkey</a>, another P2P network, originated at Microsoft. Office 2003 was the second most-pirated software behind Adobe Systems Inc.â€™s Acrobat 7. Other widely pirated Microsoft software includes InfoPath 2003, FrontPage 2003, Visio 2003, Office XP and Windows XP.<o:p /> Cori Hartje, director of Microsoftâ€™s Genuine Software Initiative, remains confident that SPP, along with <a target="_blank" href="http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9003864">another effort</a> by Microsoft to clamp down on the abuse of corporate volume license keys by pirates, can reduce the rate of piracy of Microsoftâ€™s latest products compared to previous ones.<o:p /> But the company is taking no chances, fighting back on multiple fronts. To distract downloaders who may only be seeking a sneak peek at the new software, the company's offering free online <a target="_blank" href="http://www.vistatestdrive.com/">test drives</a> of <st1:place w:st="on">Vista</st1:place> and 60-day trials of <a target="_blank" href="http://office.microsoft.com/">Office 2007</a>.<o:p /> To reach young people, who are the most enthusiastic users of P2P, Microsoft is putting <a target="_blank" href="http://www.microsoft.com/sverige/Events/License/epost-mall_kund.htm">comics</a> up on the Web, mostly in foreign languages, decrying software piracy.<o:p /> And on Monday, the company released statistics purporting to show that users downloading pirated software from P2P networks are at great risk infecting themselves with viruses or spyware.<o:p /> According to an October 2006 <a target="_blank" href="http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=73969">report</a> conducted by IDC and commissioned by Microsoft, nearly 60% of key generators and crack tools downloaded from P2P networks contained malicious or unwanted software. Hartje claims that many pirates are irresponsibly uploading malware along with their cracked goods to BitTorrent.<o:p /> "They may not be running a clean shop, and donâ€™t care if viruses are on the software," she says.<o:p /> IDC researchers used popular antivirus packages from McAfee Inc. and Symantec Corp. to detect malware. However, the researchers did not differentiate between more serious viruses and spyware and less harmful unwanted code such as adware. IDC also conceded that some P2P networks deploy built-in virus scanning that "strip[s] out most of the malicious software" before it reaches users.<o:p /> Some skeptics say that Microsoftâ€™s "education" campaign is primarily an attempt to sow <a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear%2C_uncertainty_and_doubt">FUD</a> -- fear, uncertainty and doubt -- in the minds of consumers, a tactic the company has been called out for in the past, and which could backfire.<o:p />  "Warning customers about viruses and spyware in counterfeit software is a nice PR thing for Microsoft, but for the most part, I doubt that it's really effective," says Paul DeGroot, an analyst at Directions on Microsoft, an independent consulting firm in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Kirkland</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">Wash.</st1:state></st1:place>, who applauds Microsoftâ€™s other antipiracy efforts.<o:p /> Microsoft hopes to scare consumers straight, he says, because efforts to guilt and shame consumers into not downloading, have had little success. Moreover, the company rarely targets end users of counterfeit software with lawsuits for fear of alienating customers.<o:p />  "Our main concern is preventing pirates from putting counterfeits in the hands of unsuspecting customers," says Matt Lundy, a senior attorney at Microsoft.<o:p /> The technology advances P2P technology, meanwhile, has advanced greatly since Microsoft released Windows XP in late 2001. At the time, P2P networks such as Napster and Gnutella were solely used to exchange music files. Since that time, <a target="_blank" href="http://www.napster.com/">Napster</a> has been closed and re-opened as a legitimate pay music service similar to Apple Inc.â€™s iTunes. The second-generation Gnutella has waned in popularity because of aging technology and partial neutering by the record companies, which have flooded Gnutella with decoy files masquerading as songs, Ishikawa says.<o:p /> Enter BitTorrent, which boasts faster file transfers and more reliable downloads than other P2P networks. BitTorrent was not the first P2P network to host pirated DVDs and software, but it was the first to make the trade of such hefty files practical. Moreover, BitTorrent claims it automatically cleanses its network of both viruses as well as decoy files. The latter defeats related antipiracy efforts by the music industry.<o:p /> BitTorrentâ€™s other great advantage is its ease of use compared to "darknet" services used by more sophisticated pirates, such as Internet Relay Chat channels, private FTP sites and Usenet newsgroups. For most Internet users, darknets remain hard to find -- you canâ€™t simply Google them -- and intimidating to use.<o:p /> Microsoftâ€™s worst nightmare would come to pass if P2P software piracy becomes as pervasive as the movie and music piracy. Already, the number of songs swapped illegally online surpasses the number sold in stores or online at sites like iTunes, says BigChampagne CEO Eric Garland, citing music industry estimates.<o:p /> Victory by assimilation? Faced with this situation, music and movie companies are starting to co-opt P2P. Record companies are using services like BigChampagne to scout music trends and sign up-and-coming bands, while movie studios such as <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Paramount</st1:place></st1:city> and Fox have <a target="_blank" href="http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9005478">linked up</a> with BitTorrent to sell movies via downloads.<o:p /> The software industry lags by comparison. Otherwise, Microsoft has "nothing new to announce in regards to any new distribution channels," Hartje says.<o:p /> BitTorrent did not return a call and an e-mail seeking comment.<o:p /> For Microsoft to ink a deal with BitTorrent to sell full software or even put up free trials would send out mixed messages, Ishikawa says.<o:p /> "If you ever want to litigate, donâ€™t send out any freeware," he says.<o:p /> Still, people like BigChampagneâ€™s <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Garland</st1:place></st1:city> point out that P2P software piracy today remains a drop in the bucket compared to video piracy, which involve similarly hefty files. But Sun's plans may pose issues for users, especially those with upgrade plans over the next two years. The major UltraSparc processor workhorses in the Sun line today, such as UltraSparc IV+, will be succeeded by what Sun calls its "Rock" processor, which will have up to 16 cores and is aimed at applications that need a lot of memory and number-crunching ability, such as databases. But Rock isn't due until the middle of 2008. Sun hasn't said when it will stop making improvements to its UltraSparc IV+ chip, but this summer it will introduce its Advanced Product Line (APL) servers, which it is jointly producing with Fujitsu Ltd. The APL servers will replace Sun's existing Sun Fire systems and Fujitsu's UltraSparc-based PrimePower systems. Whether Sun users who need upgrades should buy the APL systems or wait for the Rock chip is "a function of timing," said Marc Tremblay, senior vice president and chief architect for Sun's system group. If customers need an UltraSparc upgrade after next summer, they will probably buy an APL "if [they] cannot wait another year," he said. Sun detailed the product road map as part of an announcement that had completed the tape-out, or final design stage, of the Rock. "For us, the tape-out of this chip after 1,000 people-years of engineering demonstrates a commitment that we are on schedule," said Tremblay. While Rock "hits the midrange and high-end pretty hard" of its existing UltraSparc product, Tremblay isn't saying that Rock is a complete replacement of the APL. Richard Partridge, an analyst at Ideas International in Port Chester, N.Y., said that there is more than hardware timing involved for Sun customers in a decision to buy an APL or a Rock processor. Sun is betting that there will be an adequate number of parallel applications by mid-2008 and beyond that will be able to take advantage of Rock's multicore design. It could well turn out in mid-2008 that a large number of its customers will need the APL UltraSparc, because their applications can't utilize large numbers of cores. For those users, a decision as to what chip to upgrade to will depend on what applications it will support, said Partridge, who said Sun may not feel confident enough just yet to predict the application outlook. By offering APL as well as Rock, Sun is "moving in a direction that they believe is the right direction, but they at least recognize that they need a fallback plan," said Partridge. In other chip developments, Sun will detail sometime this year its end-of-life plans for UltraSparc IV and IV+. It will also release a new version of its multicore Niagara chip, which is aimed at workloads such as Web servers. Niagara has eight cores with four threads per core, but Niagara 2, which will be released sometime this summer, will remain eight cores but with eight threads per core, as well as more networking and cryptologic functions, said Tremblay. Most estimates show Internet Explorer commanding between 80% and 85% of the browser market, with Firefox trailing at somewhere between 8% and 13%. But in terms of quality, there's no clear winner right now. For years, Internet Explorer lagged far behind the competition in both features and security, but the October launch of IE7, a fairly radical overhaul of the aged browser, has brought it up to par with the rest. Almost simultaneously, Mozilla released Firefox 2.0, a less ambitious update that nevertheless made some important and well-thought-out improvements. Hackers want to play with Apple Inc.'s new toy, too. Within hours of Apple's iPhone unveiling on Tuesday, the iPhone was a hot topic on the Dailydave discussion list, a widely read forum on security research. Much of the discussion centered on the processor that Apple may have chosen to power its new device and what kind of assembly language "shellcode" might work on this chip. "Is this beast running an ARM?" wrote reverse-engineering expert Havlar Flake, "I have doubts about a mobile device being based on x86, so does anyone have details about what sort of shellcode needs to be written?" In an e-mail interview, one of the hackers behind the Month of Apple Bugs project, which is disclosing new Apple security vulnerabilities every day for the month of January, said he "would love to mess with" the iPhone. "If it's really going to run OS X, [the iPhone] will bring certain security implications, such as potential misuses of wireless connectivity facilities, [and] deployment of malware in a larger scale," the hacker known as LMH wrote in an e-mail. He declined to provide his real name. Because the device could include a range of advanced computing features, such as Apple's Bonjour service discovery protocol, it could provide many avenues of attack, according to LMH. "The possibilities of a worm for smartphones are something to worry about," he wrote. " Imagine Bonjour, and all the mess of features that OS X has, concentrated in a highly portable device which relies on wireless connectivity." "This is all speculation right now, until a technical specification is released by Apple on its features and technology," he added. David Maynor is another security researcher interested in the iPhone. Maynor's videotaped demonstration of a MacBook being hacked over a wireless network received widespread attention at last year's Black Hat USA conference, although Maynor and his co-presentor were later criticized for the way they presented their research. They demonstrated these flaws using a third-party wireless card rather than the one that ships with the MacBook, and they still have not published the code they used. "I can't wait to get one," said Maynor, who is chief technology officer with Errata Security LLC. "There's already a lot of discussion going on, and it's not coming out for another six months. People are salivating over it." Because the iPhone will be new and relatively untested, but running a familiar operating system, Maynor believes that there will be plenty of places for hackers to look for bugs. "My feeling is that this is going to be one of the easier devices to find vulnerabilities in." But there is one other factor that will also help determine how often the iPhone is hacked: its popularity. If nobody buys the $499 device, then it become less interesting to hackers. On the other hand, if it becomes as popular as the iPod, it "will become the preferred target for writers of mobile malware," wrote Kaspersky Lab Ltd. Senior Research Engineer Roel Schouwenberg in a recent blog posting. The fact that hackers looking for OS X bugs would possibly have two platforms to exploit -- Apple's computers and the iPhone -- would "mean an increase in the number of vulnerabilities identified in Apple's workstation OS," he wrote. Apple seems to be aware of the problem. Although the company was unable to provide an executive who could comment on the security of its products during this week's Macworld conference, the company was quick to respond to Havlar Flake's question on the Dailydave discussion list. The worm is infecting MySpace profiles with such efficiency that an informal scan of 150 found that close to a third were infected, said Christopher Boyd, security research manager at FaceTime Communications Inc. MySpace, owned by News Corp., is estimated to have at least 73 million registered users. The worm works by using a cross-scripting weakness found about two weeks ago in MySpace and a feature within Apple Computer Inc.'s QuickTime multimedia player. The exploit starts with a user who visits a MySpace profile infected with an embedded QuickTime movie. The movie loads JavaScript code that overlays a row of menu options on a MySpace profile with a bogus menu. A QuickTime function, called the HREF track, can direct the player to use JavaScript commands to load Web pages into a browser frame or window. The JavaScript feature in QuickTime has legitimate uses, "but there are a lot of legitimate uses for technology that can be misused," said Ross Paul, a senior product manager at security software firm Websense Inc. If an option in the bogus menu is clicked, the user is directed to a fake log-in page hosted on another server, where the person's log-in details are captured. Websense has posted a screenshot of the fake log-in page. MySpace's "seemingly random tendency" to expire user sessions or log out users makes it less noticeable to victims that an attack is under way, according to a Nov. 16 advisory by the Computer Academic Underground. Additionally, the worm places an embedded QuickTime movie on the user's profile, which will then repeat the infection process for anyone who visits the profile. The worm has another malicious function. Once a profile is infected, the worm sends spam to other people in the user's contact list. Those spam messages contain a file that appears to be a movie but instead is a link to a pornographic site that also hosts adware from Zango Inc., Boyd said. Zango, formerly 180 Solutions Inc., settled last month with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for $3 million over complaints that it didn't properly ask the consent of users before its adware was installed. Boyd said he has heard anecdotal stories of users removing the worm's JavaScript manually from their profiles, but the worm reappears after some time if one of their friend's profiles is infected. Several variants of the worm have also appeared, he said. While some of the Web sites hosting the malicious QuickTime movie have been taken down, others have appeared, Boyd said. The Firefox 2.0 browser was flagging some of the bogus log-in sites as phishing sites, Boyd said. However, phishing sites can be active for several hours before they are flagged, he said. MySpace officials had no immediate comment today.   Users of the popular MySpace website have been warned by computer experts that viruses linked to the interactive site, which boasts more than one million regular users, are in circulation. Experts believe that hackers have hit the hugely popular site and say the viruses in circulation can change settings, delete files, secretly track users' movements online and even damage computers They believe that the hackers have hidden dangerous software on the site which means that computers can be attacked unaware to users while they are just viewing pages. "There is a very real threat to users of MySpace, and in fact we have already seen several MySpace specific viruses emerge," Graham Cluley of computer security company Sophos told the Standard Lite newspaper. The site is hugely popular, especially with teenagers, and it has recorded growing numbers of users in recent months, now accounting for 4.5 per cent of all internet traffic. However, its popularity has also led to it becoming a target for scams. Mr Cluley believes the current virus can be blamed on the site's teenage appeal. "The problem is that people tend to let their guard down because they think the site is safe. But even a picture of a fluffy bunny rabbit on the site can contain a hidden piece of software that could harm your machine," he said. First of all, make sure you download Resource Hacker. You'll need this puppy to edit resources inside your Windows shell. 2. Locate explorer.exe in your c:\Windows directory. Make a copy of the file in the same directory and rename it explorer.bak. 3. Now launch Resource Hacker. In the File menu, open explorer.exe. You'll now see a bunch of collapsed folders. 4. Expand the String Table folder and then find folder No. 37. 5. Click on resource 1033 and locate the text that says "Start." This is your Start button, and now you've got control over what it says! Change the "Start" text to your text of choice. You don't have a character limit, but the text takes up valuable taskbar space, so don't make it too long. 6. Click on the button labeled Compile Script. This updates the settings for your Start button. Change your hover text While you're here, why not also change the text that pops up when your mouse hovers over your Start button? Right now it says "Click here to begin." Well, duh! We already know that's where to begin! 1. Open folder No. 34 and click on resource 1033. 2. Find the text that says "Click here to begin" and change it to something cooler. Might I suggest "Click here for a good time, baby." 3. Click on the Compile Script button to update this resource. Customize your Start icon For an added bonus, you can also change the Windows icon to the left of the text, too. 1. Collapse the String Table folder and expand the Bitmap folder at the top of your folder list. 2. Click on folder No. 143 and click on resource 1033. You should see that familiar Windows icon. 3. Go to the Action Menu and select "Replace bitmap." Select "Open file with new bitmap", and locate the replacement image on your machine. Note: The image must have a .bmp extension and a size of 25 pixels by 20 pixels. Then click the Replace button. Now that you've made your changes, save the file in your Windows folder with another name, such as newstartbutton.exe. Don't name it Explorer.exe, because that file is already being used by your system. Close all open programs and restart your system. 5. Boot into Safe Mode With Command Prompt by pressing F8 on startup. Then choose Safe Mode in the command prompt. 6. Log on as administrator and enter your password. 7. When the command prompt comes up, make sure you're in the right directory by typing "cd c:\windows" (without the quotes). 8. Now type "copy c:\windows\newstartbutton.exe c:\windows\explorer.exe" (no quotes).
