I cannot fix my aunt's computer! (due to limited knowledge, diagnosing tools and finance).

The computer froze after a few minutes logging onto an OS. Be it Windows or Linux. I do not know what to do anymore. I tried everything I possibly could. The motherboard looks new, the processor is new (Intel(R) Celeron!), the Hard Disk is 80GB only used about 10% of capacity, the RAM is however from 5 years ago, 256 MB.. Moreover, I scanned, deleted and fix every viruses and registry issues found. But still to no avail. Tried replacing the hard disk with 40GB, and different RAM of the same capability. Still no luck. I gave up. I suspect there is a component failure in the motherboard, it could be compatibility issue.. or even a failure on the processor itself. Darn!

Looking at the bright side, I learned a lot from this failure:

-- If your computer suddenly freeze/hang/stops or showing BSOD (Blue Screen of Death: that blue screen error on Windows operating systems that cause your system to shut down.) You can check what causing the problem by going to Control Panel>Administrative tools>Event Viewer or type 'eventvwr.msc' on Run command from Start>Run without the quotes. Once there you should check events that occurred at the time your computer froze. When you double click the event you can copy the information by clicking the button with two pages icon. You should then post this log somewhere on the internet where experts can help you solve the problem.

 

--In case, there's no error showing in the Event Viewer at the time of system hung up ( like my aunt's), you should try scanning for viruses. Do a boot-time scan if your antivirus can. Use scan disk tool to scan the hard drive and defrag it afterwards. This is to check the hard disk still works.

 

--What if your computer freezes before it finishes up scanning? Crazy..huh? This is what happening to my aunt's computer as well... Try installing a separate OS on a different partition and see if it freezes also. If not, the problem is most likely caused by viruses. If it is, perhaps there is a hardware failure.

 

--If harware failure suspected.. Replace your hard disk if you have other one. Not working? -Replace your RAM. Same problem? -Upgrade your RAM. Problem still persists?! -Damn it! Try installing Linux. Still hang!??? Bring it to the shop!

 

...back to sanity... if you have other working computer you can borrow the processor  and install it to the faulty computer to check whether the error came from processor. But I never do this. Risky. I was not confident. And I was tired.
