Thursday,Jun 30 2005, 12:27:22 AMTraining Pants

E was doing her nudist routine this evening and refused to wear a diaper.  So we put training pants on her to see how she would do.  She held it from dinner, thought playing in the water in a swimsuit, and went on the toilet.  So far so good.  We shall see how tomorrow goes.  Heidi wanted pants like sissey, so we put some on over her diaper.
At the hospital today I did very little.  Things are slow, but that will change tomorrow when I'm on call.  That will mean that I'm on the code team, so let's hope that doesn't happen.  My first/only patient is on a controlled crash.  The attending is trying to get a hold of the family and ask for permission to withdraw care.  It's nice to know that my first patient won't make it.  Off to do some reading so I can hopefully know what I'm doing tomorrow.

What went on today.  Well I met my team and did very little work.  By very little I mean an amount that would have taken me 1-11/2 hrs at Emory took me much longer.  I just need to learn the system.  I managed to get lost 3 times.  This hospital is very confusing.  Both Emory and Grady were easier.  Grady was essentially a figure 8. and Emory was an "I."  Got my first patient today.  Sounds like a typical Grady case: hypertension, end stage renal disease, anoxic encephalopathy, congestive heart failure, and multiple myeloma.  The poor guy is only in his 40's.

Tuesday,Jun 28 2005, 01:56:21 AMOfficially a Resident

Transitional year MD's are apparently called residents instead of interns.  That is saved for first years in medicine and family practice.  What does the first day as an MD look like?  Orientation.  Mainly to human resources and the business of hospitals.  Got an id card (that gets me free meals and parking in the doctor's lot) and a pager.  The pager will play "Dixie" as the ring, which I think is hilarious.  However, considering my patient population I'm going with the Entertainer.  I figure that little electronic leash will keep me quite entertained this year.  I was preferentially given a pager because I'm on a call service.  I get to start off with a bang doing a medicine wards month.  At least it's not the ICU.  This month should get me whipped back into shape and get my efficiency up for the rest of the year.  I stopped by Barnes and Noble on the way home from errands with the girls.  I needed a certain book to carry in my coat.  I was going to get dropped off and walk home, but the girls threw a hissy when Daddy got out and they didn't.  So Sarah brought them in and let them look at kid's books.  She told them that they could pick one out, and Heidi got really excited and began to scan all the books.  Elizabeth picked out a book about belly buttons.  This is fitting since they love their belly buttons (blah-blahs).  Heidi picked out a book on waking up.  I'm off to read to make sure I remember my CHF, CAP, and COPD.

The girls are finally adjusted to STL.  We had two weeks of
psychological torture until they settled down.  They would fuss
all day long and only be happy when they were climbing all over
us.  Sarah and I had all that we could stand and so we went to
visit friends and family in OK.  That went well, although they
were still a little fussy, grandparents helped shoulder the
burden.  Fortunately, the girls are back to their happy
selves.  They really like going on walks especially when they end
at the park.  Sarah raided a garage sale in Tulsa and now we have
a playhouse, jogging stroller and two more riding toys.  They also
like dancing and playing outside.  They get very excited when they
see a bunny or a bird.  The girls are developing away.  The
other day E was trying to trade cups with H.  H pushed E's cup
away and said "this mine, that's yours."  Another time H was
repeatedly doing something she wasn't supposed to do.  E could
tell that I was about to get up and take care of the problem so she put
her arm around H's shoulder and guided her to some toys.

We've had problems posting lately so here is one we tried to post about a week ago:

We've been in Stl for awhile now and are starting to get settled.  We like the city so far.  There are two nearby areas that have all of the stores we commonly need.  We've met some of our neighbors and seen some very nice homes that are about 1 block south of us.  There is a park about 2 blocks to the East.  Today we tried Brentwood Bible Church and liked it.  We ended up going to someone's house for lunch and did our typical Sunday routine of keeping the girls out until about 3pm before heading home for a nap.  A couple of days ago Sarah found E in the window sill!  There is a window in the kitchen that is perfect girly height.  We've been keeping the windows open a fair amount since it is still spring here.  Buff got a foot in the Window frame and up she went.  The area is infested with rabbits and doves.  The girls love birdwatching and pointing out the rabbits.  Their words for rabbit and ribbit are identical.  The girls seem to like the new house.  There is enough room in the basement for them to push their strollers and ride their bikes.  E likes to see if she can sneak up the stairs.  We put up a baby gate across the bottom of the stairs, but H gave E a boost up the side of the stairs and E was halfway up the stairs before we caught her.  The girls really like the swings and slides at the park, but that is nothing new.  They shout "Wee!" over and over while swinging.  Both have been adjusting fairly well, but have been fussier than normal.  In the first days, E would only eat on the porch.  I don't think we've taken a single picture since getting here, so we will post more when we take some.  By the way, the second picture in the May 05 album was taken at my grandparent's farm.  We don't have cows in our backyard, only rabbits.  Donegal, our dog, seems to be adjusting to life in Tulsa as he's claimed the area by covering it with his hair.  Better than marking it.  Apparently he is now flea free, unfortunately we aren't.
