Obama is the most voted president-elect in U.S. history
WASHINGTON (AFP) - With unprecedented numbers of voters to participate, the first black U.S. president, Barack Obama, if elected here Tuesday with a record number of votes, according to data from the U.S. National Archives.
Obama also had the highest percentage ever obtained by a Democrat since Lyndon B. Johnson, who took 61.1% of the votes in 1964.
At 18:30 GMT on Wednesday, with results published in 48 states and the District of Coumba, Obama accumulated 349 delegates in the Electoral College, against 163 of the Republican John McCain.
The senator for Illinois was declared winner after the historic election dispute over the 270 delegates needed.
The television networks showed that Obama won with 52% of the popular vote, against 46% for McCain.
The president-elect, of 47 years, raised 63.25 million votes nationally, while the Arizona senator collected 55.9 million, according to NBC, CBS and Fox News.
In all, more than 130 million Americans have been to the polls, the highest number ever obtained in a general election in the United States. The U.S. National Archives reported that 63.25 million votes is the highest figure already reached by a candidate for the presidency in the country.
Obama scored his advantage since the beginning of the investigation, bearing in Pennsylvania and Ohio, states that since 1960 when voting for the candidate who ends up winning the presidential election.
Then the Democrat candidate received a majority in the states of Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Missouri, New Mexico and Virginia.
McCain hopes to retain the only Republican in Georgia, highly conservative state, which has 15 delegates in the Electoral College.
Meanwhile, attendance at mass with a population of african american, none of the key states gave the victory to McCain: the Virginia, traditionally Republican, voted for Obama, as well as Florida, which guaranteed the state presidency to George W. Bush in 2000 - in a controversial recount of the votes - and western Colorado and New Mexico.
Missouri and North Carolina had not yet released its final results, but everything indicates that the first and second vote for McCain, for Obama.
Barack Obama easily maintained the traditional Democratic bastions as New York, California and Illinois, who elected state senator, and grab the jewels of the Northeast: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan. Moreover, won Iowa and Nevada.
The American electoral system that determines the winner of a state gets all the delegates at stake, except in Maine and Nebraska, which divide them in proportion.
