One of the most popular feasts is that of the Assumption of Our Lady, which the Maltese popularity refer to as Santa Marija ( Saint Mary ) or L'Assunta ( the Assumption ) This feast is held in ten locations ---Attard, Dingli, Ghaxaq, Gudja, Mgarr,Mosta, Imqabba and Qrendiin Malta and in Gozo .....Victoria and Zebbug.As only seven of these localities organise their feast in the Liturgical day that is on August 15, in Malta is was cutomary to visit these seven villages on the eve of these feasts. Those who did not have their own means of transport used to visit the seven nearby chapels which were dedicated to the Assumption. Despite the festive mood, a sense of spiritual devotion used to prevail, with visirors reciting the Holy Rosary at each and every church or chapel visited Throughout the week before the feast, every locality organises band marches played by the local or a visiting band. During these marches people from all walks of life accompany the band, and youg people join in the revelry. As the band players march , they are showered with confetti from balconies and windows along the route. These band marches start from the band club to the firing of petards and fire crackers., and at the end at the club again with more fireworks.The popular marches played by the bands are usually written by past and present Maltese composers and band masters. The main attraction in the church is the statue of the Assumption. This life size figure is gilded and usually made by a famous Maltese sculptor, such as that of Ghaxaq which was made of wood by Mariano Gerada. Attard's statue is unique as it is made of terracotta. These statues are placed on either a silver or gilt phlint which is placed on a mohagony cybe shaped stand. These statues are decorated with four or six flower vases. The streets and squares of the village are decorated with large pelmets placed across the streets , known as .......Pavaljuni. they uswally show religious symbols associated with Our Lady or a scene from the life of the Virgin. They are uasually very colourfull with the most popular colours being yellow red and green. The streets are sometimes decorated with papier mache figures showing angels, biblical figures ore scenes depicting Our Lady. The streets are festooned with strings of light bulbs covered with green decorative paper so that the wires are not visible. The main attraction of the feast, is the procession in which members of the lay confraternities take part. In the past every parish had a number of these guilds. The members dress up in a white cassock topped with a short coloured cape. At their waist thjey carry a rope to which rosary beads are tied as well as a silver image of the patron saint of their guild or confraternity.The green capes are worn by the confraternity of St Michael, while red denotes the confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. Dark blue associated with the confraternity of St Joseph,and light blue with any Marian confraternity. Black is worn by members of the Holy Cricifix or Passion confraternities. The clergy also take part wearing their best vestments, and the sexton usually accompanies the altar boys carrying the silver cross, which is referred to as the Cross of the clergy. The procession is not complete without the statue, which is carried shoulder high through the streets. The climax is reached when the procession reaches the main square in front of the church. Fireworks are let off. the bells peal and enthusiasim reaches a peak as the statue moves through the crowd to make its way back inside the church--not to be taken out of its niche for another year.Tags: | Edit Tags
