If you took a pinch of blues, throw in some country on acid, add some generous proportions of good foot stompin' rock and roll and top it all off with sheer brute force and passion then you may come close to the power and energy that is Chris Matthews. Whether evoking sweet melodies from a lap steel, to making his trusty 6 string acoustic roar like a wounded grizzly bear, to laying down a fat groove with his bath mat covered stomp box, it’s sometimes hard to believe that it’s only one guy up on stage making it all happen.
Originally hailing from south west WA, Matthews is rapidly building a reputation as one of Australia’s finest young guitarists and songwriters with his original take on rockin’ blues, wild slide and flat out finger picking. He has developed an amazing technique of playing bass, rhythm and lead on the one guitar, which is incredible to both behold and hear. Matthews is continually honing his songs of people, places and spaces on the road with over 80,000 km’s on the trip meter, and clocking up more than 900 gigs all over Australia in the last four years alone. Late nights, 5 hour gigs, much broken gear and countless hours of playing have formed him into a highly entertaining and energetic player, with his witty stage banter and stories of the road elevating him above the rest of the pack.
After an extensive 7 month tour of Australia in 2006 covering all states and territories, Matthews is once again off on the road throughout 2007. With a bunch of new songs and also a new album out, he will be travelling from in house to outhouse, desert to the sea, north to south, and everywhere in between. With every show he plays, Matthews delivers the goods in spades, and just keeps getting better. Make sure you catch him as he winds his way around the country this year.
