Monday,Jul 20 2009, 12:10:50 AMThe Unseen Hero Release
Hello,
My name is Matt Atkinson and I am a budding author. I wrote my book to share my experiences in my life and am using a portion of the proceeds to help fund a non profit dealing with school violence. I have a dream to tour the country and maybe even the world speaking on ways to prevent school violence. My book is available on amazon.com by selecting books and typing my name in MATT ATKINSON the book is called THE UNSEEN HERO. Here is a preview:
The day is April third nineteen eighty-nine and the time is
approximately six pm CST. A little baby boy is born to Rick and Nancy
Atkinson. He was a nice sized healthy baby. The only complication was that
the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck. That baby was me.
My parents went many days before finding the right name for their
little boy. They finally settled on Matthew John Atkinson. My first name
meant "Gift of God.” My middle name was after my grandfather on my
mom's side. Oh if my parents only knew how true that name would become
later in my life.
Life for me has never been a cake walk. My parents divorced after
having been married just over a year. I was too young to ever know what
was happening at the time. I myself was only a year old. My mother was
always there for me. She would get up every day and walk me to my
daycare, then take the bus to work and then walk me back home when she
got done. She got me started in a program called Head Start which was
preschool. My dad was against it. Personally I think it helped me turn out the
way I did. Mom and I were far from living on the high horse. We were dirt
poor. We lived in an apartment that had cheap rent at the time and we still
had to have help from the government to pay for it. We were also on
government help to get food. And to top it all off we had no air conditioning.
It was horrible. Then you add into the equation my dad trying to get
back with my mom. He would bring gifts to her and try and sweet talk her
and all this stuff. It got to the point that my mom filed harassment charges
and many restraining orders against him. To this day he still denies this ever
happened. As I got older I researched it and found it was true.
We moved down the street to a town house when I was eight. We
were doing better money wise but we were by no means rich. We only
moved up a tiny bit on the social class ladder. It was good from what I
remember. I went to school at Eisenhower Elementary. I still remember my
kindergarten teacher . Boy she was a great teacher. Don't really remember
much of her class but I remember her very well. She had a greatest sense of
humor. She could make a joke out of the smallest thing.
Still remember the day I met my step dad. He was the cousin of one of
my mom's friend's husband. I had also grown up with mom's friend's
daughter. We were practically siblings. He was a very nice guy. I didn't have
a problem with him. For some reason my dad hated him. I don't know if he
felt my step dad was going to replace him or what. I also believe somewhere
in that time frame my sister was born. She was a cute little baby I tell you. I
remember the day mom went into the hospital with stomach pains. Next
thing I know I'm getting told I have a sister!
I was in shock. I'll be honest I was a bit mad. Now I wouldn't get the
undivided attention. I soon forgot that when I saw her. Now every baby is
cute but my god my sister was cuter than all of the other babies I swear. She
had the deepest blue eyes and very blonde hair with a little curl in front. I
was a good brother though I helped take care of my sister. I would hold her
and feed her and I even allowed her to share my room. Boy was that a trip.
She never slept very well for some reason. She was always waking me up. I
would get up and go let mom know and sometimes I would just grab a bottle
or toy and quiet her down. Although she was easy. The only way to quiet me
down when I was young was to take me for a ride or put me in a baby swing.
Life was normal for the next two years. I believe I was ten when it
happened. My step dad asked to talk to me alone. He sat me down and did
something that I think every man who plans on marrying a woman with kids
should do. He asked my permission to marry my mom. I gave it to him. I
knew he was a nice guy and I figured mom needed a nice guy in her life.
The day they got married was awesome. I got to stand up. I was the ring
barer. Boy I tell you that is a lot of work! You ever see the episode of The
Simpsons where Bart is ring barer for a wedding and the rings somehow fall
off the pillow into the organ? I felt as if that was going to happen. But there
was no organ; it was in the middle of a local park. Well I didn't lose the rings
and the wedding went off without a hitch. As a gift my mom gave me a solid
gold key chain with my name on it and a dinosaur engraved on the back.
Then came one of the life changing events I have experienced in my
life. But first let me give you a little background information. My dad had
always had partial custody of me. I would see him every weekend, every
Wednesday and then mom and dad would trade-off holidays. He was a
paperboy for a local newspaper and pretty much had days off. He wasn't rich
but was living very comfortably in a duplex. He had a dog named Shadow.
He was a very nice dog, a black lab. I literally grew up with him. My dad
had gotten him when I was about a year old. It was a nice place. I had my
own room and my dad slept on the couch. Why I don't know because the
house had two bedrooms. It worked out in the end because my dad's friend
Nick who was in the Air Force had been discharged and moved in. Dad
stayed on the couch and Nick used dad's room. Nick was a bouncer at a local
bar so it worked just perfectly. Dad would wait for Nick to come home
which was around two thirty a.m. and dad would leave around then. I loved
it because dad felt safe that I wasn't home alone and I didn't have to go with
dad to do the papers.
Well now we get into the good part. It was about eleven p.m. or so
and I was watching T.V. Dad had just woke up and was watching T.V. on
the couch. The phone rang. It struck me as odd and I got a little scared. Dad
answered it and began to talk. He talked until approximately one a.m. Then
hung up, grabbed his keys and nearly walked out the door. I asked him what
was going on. He said that he had an emergency to tend to and not to stay up
too late. I was a bit scared, had something happened to grandma or one of
my elderly aunts or uncles, but I was young and it just kind of passed out of
my mind.
When I woke up the next day I asked dad about the previous night. He
said it a friend of his that he met while he was still with my mom. She was
threatening to commit suicide and he went to save her. I thought of him as a
hero. Within about six months after that my dad got evicted and lost his
truck. So we moved in with the girl that he saved. Her name was my dad's
girlfriend. I was confused about the whole thing. I just didn't understand.
Well I found out that Dad was funneling a good share of his money to her
and not using it to pay his bills. To this day I still don't understand the whole
thing.
But I made the best of it. She had a son that was a few years younger
than me. His name was her son. He was nice and we got along good. I had a
Playstation that was at my dad's house so naturally it was transferred when
we moved. We would sit on that thing for hours. Now is when things start to
get just plain weird.
It was about six p.m. and dad was getting ready for work, he was
driving cab for a local company. He lost the paperboy job because he trusted
a friend to do it while we were on vacation and the guy didn't do it so dad
got fired. I got a start on my homework and dad left. I told him I loved him
and he told me to get to bed at a decent time and then he left. I was sitting in
an armless chair that had a cow design on it. Then my dad's girlfriend went
into the bedroom and called her son in there too. She said they had to talk. I
thought nothing of it. I continued to do what I was doing. That’s when I
experienced one of the scariest things in my life. her son exited the room and
come behind me. He sat down and the next thing I knew I was gasping for
air. He was choking me. I didn't know what to do. I froze. I must have been
becoming low on oxygen because I saw a good portion of my life pass
before my eyes. Trust me it is not a thing you want to see at the age of
fourteen.
Then my dad's girlfriend said "Don't kill him yet." That is when I
really got scared. her son released his grip just enough so I could breathe just
a little bit. my dad's girlfriend went to the kitchen drawer and grabbed a
paring knife and put it to my neck. Another thing you don't want to feel at
fourteen. I was literally too scared to function. The look in her eyes was
VERY scary. They literally went red. She started telling me to confess. I was
confused, what was I supposed to confess. She told me that God had come to
her in a dream. He told her that my dad and I were going to kill her and her
son in their sleep. I was a little bit scared, a little bit confused and I little bit
THIS IS ONE HELL OF A NIGHTMARE. I pleaded with her and it sort of
worked I guess. I couldn't move because her son was behind me with he
hands around my neck and she was right in front of me with a knife. Then
my guardian angel must have stepped in or something because her son got
up and told her to stop. He talked her out of killing me. If that didn't happen
you wouldn't be reading this right now.
She drove the knife into the floor and broke down. I was still frozen
and trying to process everything. my dad's girlfriend told me to call my dad,
I wasn't about to argue. I called and told them to send my dad home because
there had been an emergency. They hung up on me. I wasn't too surprised at
this because my dad's girlfriend had a habit of calling and saying that
something had happened. In reality she just wanted him to grab a pizza or a
pack of cigarettes for her. So I made a snap decision, I started talking to my
dad's girlfriend. Just real calm and making small talk. She told me if the
incident ever left the house she would kill my family starting with dad, then
my sister, next mom, and then me. She then told me to go to bed. I went into
the bedroom but didn't go to bed. I lay on the floor next to the door. It
seemed like eternity but only an hour had passed and my dad was home. my
dad's girlfriend and him started talking and she called me out. She told me to
tell him what happened. I told him and I will never forget his reaction, he
told me to keep it in the house. WHAT! I'm sure you’re as shocked as I was.
How could my dad say something like that? I felt so betrayed.
Dad went back to work and I went back into the bedroom. I was too
scared and mad to sleep. Morning came and I went to school. All day I was
thinking about what happened. I was only half paying attention. I was
devoting the other half of my brain to figuring out what to do. Amazingly
nobody ever knew at school what happened. All day I replayed different
things that could happen. If I didn't tell I would have to keep reliving it. If I
did tell somebody and my dad's girlfriend found out I risk having my family
killed. I really didn't know what to do. Mom picked me up from school and
everything was normal, until supper.
Mom could tell something wasn't right. She asked me at least three
times before I told her. I explained it almost exactly the way it is described
in this book. Mom was quite shocked. Her response was for me to do what I
felt was right. I thought about it for a little while and I called the cops. The
lady who answered thought I was nuts for not calling sooner. I told her I was
scared. Within ten minutes there was an officer in my living room. It
happened to be the dad of on of my sister's friends. I recognized him but that
was about it. He was a very good officer. He took very detailed notes, asked
a few questions about where they could find my dad's girlfriend, and then
asked me to read over everything to make sure it was correct.
I didn't sleep very much that night because I was scared she was going
to find me or hurt my dad. I called him the next day and he said that they had
caught her. The cops had come to the house but just my dad was there. They
put out an APB or All Points Bulletin on her. What that means is that any
officer that spots her is to pick her up and detain her for questioning. She
was later found at a local bar very intoxicated. That put me at ease at least. It
was a Friday I think so if they let her out on bail it would be Monday at
least. I don't remember if they ever did set bail for her.
Mom and I had numerous conversations with the Assistant District
Attorney. They wanted me to testify against my dad's girlfriend. I was all for
it, I wanted justice to happen. The judge ultimately decided I was too young.
Both my dad and my dad's girlfriend were facing criminal charges. She was
facing felony second degree reckless endangerment and dad was facing
misdemeanor child endangerment because of what he told me to do. Mom
and I both went to court because I wanted to hear for myself the sentences.
Dad got two years probation with no contact to me. Over time he was
allowed one call a week in the presence of his probation officer. Then in the
final stages he was allowed to talk to me if I called him. He was also allowed
to have supervised visits with me if I so chose. We only did that once.
