I believe the prisoners have a right to be visited occasionally by their families... that would make it a bit difficult

If you want to cut down on the spending, you might want to pull back a few soldiers from Iraq. Every single second in Iraq costs the US $5000. That's every single second! So, $40000 per year seems a bargain then all of a sudden. That $40000 wouldn't last 10 seconds compared to what "being in Iraq" costs.

This is atleast something to compensate.. it might sound crazy.. but couple of hundred years ago Britain either threw criminals in the army or dumped them on Australia. Worked fine then...

Smarter would be to let prisoners be productive. I'm not sure how smart it is to step back a few hundred years in time. It has taking "our" western world this long to develop some decent standards. Stepping back in time might not be the smartest plan.


And I hardly see this "plan" as compensating for something that is clearly throwing money out of the political window. What if the US would pull back completely from Iraq? You could invest that money into better ways to prevent crime in the US in the first place. To improve rehabilitation programs. To educate in order to prevent. And you'd have loadsa money left to start paying off the (inter)national debts.

The US should work on trying to alleviate criminal behaviour altogether. Stricter policies on gun owners, gun storage, stricter jail penalties for re-offenders, and longer sentences for major crimes, etc.

Outsourcing criminals to another (poorer) country is kind of just saying, "Oh no, I have cancer, but that's ok, I'll just cut it out and stick it into someone else." It's not addressing the problem, it's just putting a bandaid over it.

Outsourcing jobs to India and China is beneficial to them economically; outsourcing criminals to them is not something their governments would accept. The government tried using criminals in the military and they proved extremely unreliable(often going AWOL), so what could China or India rely on these criminals for other than forced labor?(which would be a violation of their rights). This plan strikes me as being very unrealistic, and the majority of these high costs are the result of lengthy appeals processes. Judiciary reforms might be wise, but where can one draw the line between the area in which one makes sound economic decisions, and where one fails to ascertain true guilt or innocence through a rushed process? Simplifying conditions within prisons in terms of accomodations is a possibility, but with longer sentences the costs still add up regardless. It would be unfair to force families to incur the costs(and there is a failed precedent for this), so it would seem that the best way would be to replace prisons with strictly regulated labor camps that produce more important things than license plates and such. This may be somewhat Stalinist, but at long as people aren't constantly recruited through dubious and spurious charges...

USA has more people in prison than any other country on this planet- with as high as 10% of our population incarcerated- there's a pretty good chance that this could be a potential political time bomb, and also it could cause complete social revolution.. and am sure the cost would be more economical that what our government is spending now..

So far less then 10% of crimes get solved. The only people who will get "rail-road-ed" to jail because of higher quotas are criminals who have so far gotten off scot free.

Why should not criminals WORK OFF their debt to society instead of living in jail at taxpayers expense? They should work separating paper from plastic from cans... the lest we can do is reduce the cost for them!

It helps to actually consider things which are said TO you(for example my suggestion of labor camps in place of prisons). I do think they should have to work it off(obviously), but not by some laughable policy of outsourcing.
