'Prisoner 650' Dr. Afia Siddiqui

Dr. Afia Siddiqui, was arrested along with her three children by a Pakistani intelligence agency in early 2003 and has been missing since then. American and Pakistani intelligence agencies confirmed that she had been arrested in connection with Al-Qaeda, the terrorist organisation. However, later both agencies denied that she had been arrested. Dr. Afia's whereabouts remain unknown but it is suspected that she is being held in an American detention centre. At the time of her arrest she was 30 years and the mother of three sons the oldest of which was four and the youngest only one month. Dr. Afia's whereabouts remain unknown, there are reports of a woman called 'Prisoner 650' is being detained in Afghanistan's Bagram prison and that she has been tortured to the point where she has lost her mind. Dr. Afia Siddiqui, who studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US, for about 10 years and did her PhD in genetics, returned to Pakistan in 2002. Having failed to get a suitable job, she again visited the US on a valid visa in February 2003 to search for a job and to submit an application to the US immigration authorities. She moved there freely and came back to Karachi by the end of February 2003 after renting a post office box in her name in Maryland for the receipt of her mail. It has been claimed by the FBI (Newsweek International, June 23, 2003, issue) that the box was hired for one Mr Majid Khan, an alleged member of Al Qaeda residing in Baltimore.

Is it fair to put a human being thru such cruelty without giving any chance of defenceIt wud have been better if they killed her. And what happened to the 3 kids? Are they also terrorist?

We are sorry sis not to save you.

A British journalist, Yvonne Ridley, she believes that Dr. Afia has been held in isolation by the Americans in their Bagram detention centre in Afghanistan, for over four years. "She call her the 'grey lady' because she is almost a ghost, a spectre whose cries and screams continues to haunt those who heard her,"

Ms Ridley, who went to Pakistan to appeal for help, said the case came to her attention when she read the book, The Enemy Combatant, by a former Guantanamo detainee, Moazzam Begg. After being seized in February 2002 in Islamabad, Mr Begg was held in detention centres in Kandahar and Bagram for about a year before he was transferred to Guantanamo Bay. He recounted his experiences in the book after his release in 2005.

wot kin of confirmation you need man. you mean CIA or anyother angency should official declare dat she is arrested. Man if this is happend, than she will be released by the court in one minute, dats for sure. There are lot of people are missing, no one know bt their whereabouts. our s**t intelligence agencies hand them over to CIA for dam interrogation. She was arrested in 2003 and a few days later an American news channel, NBC, reported that Afia had been arrested in Pakistan on suspicion of facilitating money transfers for terror networks of Osama Bin Laden. The mother of the victim, Mrs. Ismat (who has since passed away) termed the NBC report absurd. She went on to say that Dr. Afia is a neurological scientist and has been living with her husband, Amjad, in the USA for several years.

Her 3 innocent childeren are also missing. now i guess you also need the confirmation that did Afia have any childeren, if so where are their birth certificates.

@backbencher1, i just see you're very keen on accusing people merely based on assumptions.

i find very one-sided that, you also don't even consider the possibility that she indeed was involved in some of the al-qaeda operations, and that she lives now in clandestinity.

whatever.

well i m not accusing, may be u right, she was involved in some of Al-qaeda operations (thought its an assumption too)but the way they held her in Prison is not right, i m against it, they should brought her in the court of law, giver her a chance of defence. well wot had happend if some one did all this to a EU or American woman????????????

According to the BBC Urdu, the FBI has conceded that Dr. Afia Siddiqi who had vanished from Karachi over five years ago in March 2003 along with her children is in the custody of American forces in Afghanistan but sadly in a horrid medical condition.

The information comes from BBC, when it received an email from lawyers based in the US hired by Dr. Afia’s brother to try and help influence the release of her sister who has been allegedly been in the custody of American forces. The lawyers claims that on Thursday an agent from the FBI came to Dr. Afia Siddiqui’s brothers house and admitted to the fact that Dr. Afia is indeed in solitary confinement within a prison in Afghanistan and in serious medical condition.

yea u r right, its basically news which i posted for comments and seek attention of other ppl on this sad issue. well here are some more news for you.

DO U BELIEVE on ALL THIS?

Though a US district judge set August 11 for hearing the bail plea of Pakistani American neuroscientist Dr Aafia Siddiqi, who was arrested in Afghanistan for allegedly trying to kill US army officers, her attorneys fear that she could face more charges to make sure that she stays behind bars.

Her attorneys Elizabeth Fink and Elaine Sharp shared the view after Dr Aafia Siddiqi’s arraignment here on Monday evening that the case against Dr Aafia was absurd and it was difficult to believe that a woman weighing only 90 pounds could snatch a rifle and shoot at an army officer twice. There was nothing in this case that’s why the investigators could bring some new charges against her to ensure that she does not come out of prison.

Earlier, a frail looking Dr Aafia Siddiqi limped into court with the help of her lawyers and pleaded not guilty to the charges of attempted murder and assault on US army officers in an Afghan police station. That was her first appearance since her mysterious disappearance from Karachi in 2003. Dr Aafia was wearing a maroon veil, blue shirt and long black skirt. She uttered only four sentences during the 30-minute long arraignment proceedings.

At one point when the prosecutors told the court that Dr Aafia was arrested in Afghanistan on August 4, the Judge remarked that it is difficult to produce a person in the court so swiftly, even from Bronx. The prosecutor tried to clarify saying that there was time difference between two sides of the world, thatís why it was possible to bring Dr Aafia to the court the next day. Prosecutors denied that Dr Aafia was arrested on July 18 after the alleged incident.

On the request of defence lawyers the Judge ordered medical evaluation of Dr Aafiaís wound and also ordered to provide her proper medical treatment. Prosecutors argued that Dr Aafia was being taken care of and because of her medical condition a doctor flew with her from Afghanistan. Judge also allowed Dr Aafia to remain seated because of her oozing wound when he was reading out charges against her.

Prosecutors have alleged in their complaint that Aafia Siddiqi was stopped by police on July 17 outside a government building in central Afghanistanís Ghazni province. Police searched her handbag and discovered documents containing recipes for explosives and chemical weapons and describing various landmarks in the United States, including New York City, Siddiqi also was carrying chemical substances in gel and liquid that were sealed in bottles and glass jars,î the complaint said without elaborating.

The next day, as a team of FBI agents and US military officers prepared to question Siddiqi, she snatched a soldierís rifle and pointed it at an Army captain, prosecutors said. An interpreter pushed the rifle aside as she fired two shots, which missed, they said. One of two shots fired by a soldier in response hit her in one of her hips.

Asked by the Judge if she understood the charges, she replied in a soft voice, ìI understand them.î

On the request of Defence lawyers Judge set Monday, August 11 to hear the bail petition and fixed August 19 for preliminary hearing of the case. If convicted, Aafia Siddiqi faces up to 20 years in prison on each charge. Attorney Elaine Sharpe, to a question, said Dr Aafia is not aware of the whereabouts of her three kids, who were accompanying her at the time of her disappearance in Karachi.

It is necessary. If she was arrested, it will be for a reason.

Well everyone's arrested for a reason, whether or not the reason is a particularly good or valid one, that's a different story. ;)
