Swine Flu and Animals
The good news is the H1N1 virus will not effect our companion animals such as dogs and cats. The bad news, the recent outbreak is effecting pigs.
In Egypt, pigs have been given the death sentence. 300,000-350,000 pigs are living in Egypt, raised for food for the Christian population. Sadly, this isn't just a bad ending for the pigs, who haven't been found to have the virus, but also for the poor farmers who raise them.
"It has been decided to immediately start slaughtering all the pigs in Egypt using the full capacity of the country's slaughterhouses," said Health Minister Hatem el-Gabaly. People can not get the swine flu from eating pork, so without confirmed cases of sick pigs, the killings are a sad over reaction. Though Egypt has it's reasons due to it's experiences with bird flu, it's still a waste of good resources. Not to mention it seems horribly wasteful to destroy healthy animals that will not be used for food.
Hopefully we won't see similar reactions anywhere else in the world.

What good is killing all the pigs going to do? If they are infected and a threat, then the damage has already been done.
It's an airbourne virus, spread through the sharing of germs. Maybe they should spend a little more energy on detaining the people infected so that it doesn't spread any further.
People are really stupid sometimes. This whole thing has been blown out of proportion, just like the Bird Flu was. Poor pigs, it's not their fault :(

I agree Emma whole thing has blown out of all proportion. "What did happen with the bird flu did it fly"?Just another government excuse to waste money on setting up yet another office and and more leaflets that will only be binned.

If I recall "Swine Flu" is so called because it developed in a pig farming community and was unknown until identified with the more advanced Lab tests, As stated elsewhere A(H1N1) "Influenza A virus subtype H1N1" as its now know has been around in numerous forms for years, this time officially designated as being a mutation from a porcine flu, jumping species into humans. Its been missing for quite a number of years and genetically humans have lost inherited protection. Governments throwing money at it does seem a waste, for most it will be a prolonged flu bout (made longer by all sorts of remedies) but politically they don't want to be seen as doing nothing. There is a mortality rate, especially in those that have weakened systems anyhow, and as they tend to be the young and old there is a desire for a fix. Seasonal flu is known to have a high mortality, but doesn't get the publicity. We can all empathise with those that will suffer a loss, it should not be greater just because of a label.

They are Shunned by Most Muslim countries where pork consumption is a religious taboo, Outlawed in Algeria, Mauritania and Libya, pig farming is nonetheless authorized in Tunisia as in Morocco, to cater to the flocks of European and other non-Muslim tourists.

Take this so called "pandemic" for instance.... it's been labeled "swine flu"..... yet Swine flu only affects pigs.
The influenza A (H1N1) virus on the other hand does effect humans.... it is transmited via humans both in touch and a close range airborne virus i.e. a cough or sneeze.
So why's it called swine flu? well lets see, it'sgot parts of the human influenza A strain, the Avian Influenza strain and 2 different swine influenza strains....... So some moron desided to label it swine flu, probaly not realizing the differences. But hey, lets just beleive all the hype about this flu, it's gonna kill what.... 2 million people world wide? kinda reminds me of the bird flu prediction of 500,000 world wide..... I mean lets take a look at the pandemics that have happened world wide in the past ... say 100 years...
1918–19 Spanish flu ....... killed an estimated 500 million people world wide.
1957 Asian flu.... killed an estimated 45 million people
1968–69 Hong Kong flu.... killed and estimated 50 million people
2003 Bird flu ..... killed 115 people.......
2009 ...... swine flu...... killed 31 people.........
don't beleive all the hype people. unless of course you live in a piss poor 3rd world country with backwards customs and an embarressing excuse for a healthcare system..... in which case the rest of the world does not want to know. For the simple fact we have already pumped billions of dollers into your countries in an attempt to raise your standards of living and you have pissed that money and aid away..... reap what you sow.
