BECAUSE many words have Different meetings yet are spelt the same as others, or are spelt the same but pronounced the same,

FAST means high speed
FAST means stuck *fast* with glue
FAST means going without food!

Wind means the air blowing (long i)
wind means to turn on a spindle (Short i)

Bow = ribbon tied prettily
bow = what you do at the end of a play on a stage
Bow = what you shoot arrows with!
Bow = used on a violin!
Bow-Wow = what a dog says lol
bough pronounced as in dog language is part of a branch of a tree

hehehe

Now how confusing that must be for you

Also English is not ONE language it is MANY!

English has no hard and fast rules, nearly every rule has exceptions.

It's a derivative from the bough of a tree, from the old hollow-outs, but it's still slightly different, as it's "evolved"

Speak of the bough of a tree today. Then look to a carrier, the bough of a carrier. They are quite different now, even though that is the origin of the term for a ship.

there are proofs out there, studies that confirm English (proper) as being one of the most difficult languages of the world. You want to throwin politics and generalize everything to such an extreme that your references to "America" are like me talking about Hitler's great economy and plan... and then blaming those from Greece -- after all, you're in Europe too!... kind of stupid to broaden and generalize o such an extreme isn't it?

So don't. Grow up and recognize that EVERY nation lies, that there is no such thing as a "good nation" and then, try to stay ON TOPIC -- you know... LANGUAGE not rampant tangents trying to back your opinion, while completely ignoring mine and claiming it as discredited on fictional proofs.

So you want to be done? Good, because quite honestly, your rays of incoherent psychobabble are far from the bulwark you suggest, and only further prove the considerable lack of thought, as supported through your polyglotical malformations and Picasso-like interpretation of reality. Frankly, your misspellings and topic hopping are enough to make even your point nearly intangible at best. Good day.

There are so many forms of English... that's part of what makes it more difficult... lol. I mean really, taking "common" English and trying to talk about that as though it's the embodiment of English... that's about like saying because you know how to put air in a tire, you can build a car from scratch! That girl got me upset, I'm sorry but she needs to learn a little more before mouthing off on whims and providing opinions as facts without ANY proof!

If she said it was her OPINION, then it would be fine with me, but she came across to me as all "holier than THOU!" and basically said that I was wrong and she was right, because she said so. EXCUSE ME?!? lol

I'd never get upset with you Chris; I know that you always are more than willing to give proof to back what you say, or you say it's your opinion :D That's one of the reasons that I like to read what you have to say so much.

The differences in Australian, American, Canadian, and British English is truly amazing sometimes, isn't it? lol Just the common use names of things cause a lot of hilarity at times! haha...

Skip, Lou, Toilet, Browner, stink bin, porcelain throne, white seat, Spinner, drop spot, etc... Who'd have even thought about all those names?!? hahaha... it's insanity trying to keep current with friends from all the "major" English speaking countries... haha :S

Examples:
Gotta love "Bin" and "Lift" in American vs. British... lol
British: Bin = Trash can
American: Bin = Mass Container/ storage container

British: Lift = Elevator
American: Lift = Construction machinery (not to be confused with the fork-lift)

There are many others... my ex and myself had a WORLD of confusion trying to understand one another to begin with... haha :P
lol

Ro - The Dar Royal Zorpian Verified Zorpian 30, Frankfort, Kentucky, United States
I suggest you look into the origins of nite, and the differences that exist between "night" and "nite" -- they are NOT the same thing.
Americans have adjusted "English" the same as have Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, etc. It's called inherent localization of terminology. We don't always truncate, but rather we broaden, and create "everyday slang" that becomes a part of our society, and is then widely accepted as normal, although not always proper.
I'm extremely tired of people who talk as if their crap doesn't stink to me. The etymologies that are inherent in ANY language are derivative of a common language (traced far enough back) that has been corrupted and polluted by the same diversification and splintering of the "base" language terms is the natural progression of each nationality and locality, that has been in motion for all recorded history.
I don't care what nation you are from, your language is a true BASTARD language, there is not such thing as a pure language in the modern world. Every language has been "tweaked" with the adoption of foreign language terminology, derivatives, contractions, slang terminologies, etc.
Nite vs. Night. vs. Knight... It's a monotonous argument, and is nothing more than the blatant realization that you cannot contribute to any true problem in my reasoning, so you have had to try to attack the semantics of the way of speech of a group of people, of which your comment was attacking me, when I hadn't used the term.
By the way:
Nite = Abbreviated form of "Good night" used in informal settings.
Night = The opposite of day, when the moon is out.
Knight = A warrior that holds to the concepts of chivalry, and the ideals of loyalty derived from the medieval concepts set forth to the majority of the public of today in such literary works as "King Aurthur and the Knights of the Round Table" or some of the Shakespearian plays.
As I had said prior, I am working to learn other languages as well. If someone believes they are ready to attack another language, they should know enough to be able to either keep up, or at least have the ability to research enough to understand what is being debated. If they cannot, then that person should not be arguing about the language until they can stand alone, competent.

Did I tell you I have great fun when I was in the USA on my world trip. For I visited two junior schools (6 to 10) and two universities. In three of them (The two Junior schools) I told the children and how USA & UK English use the same words to mean different things. It waas great fun, and even the teachers didn't know all of them! I did more or less the same in the Oklahoma University, where they were studying how English changes.

It's strange because most non-English speaking people don't understand that while a lift to you is an elevator to me, that we can understand one another, as well as people such as Aslyn speaking of her "shrimp on the barbie" or the "hop about" out back...

Apparently, there isn't such a chasm of terminology between the Arabic languages? Perhaps the Iranians and those in Iraq can speak to one another without having to be able to understand that their languages aren't identical? Or perhaps the people arguing so harshly are relating to the fact that there is NO difference between Imperial Chinese, Taiwanese, or Cantonese?

I honestly think that they just want to fight because they have nothing better to do... lol

I'm sorry I was gone for so long, I had a lot that I had to work through... still some things that I'm struggling with, but I should be back a bit more regularly now...

Iran (former Persia) and its pplare of Indo-Arian origin and Farsi is an Indo-Arian language. Arabic is a Semitic language. Iranian ppl use the Arabian alphabet (with some additional signs) but the language is totally different. Same as Urdu (Pakistan, nearly same language as Hindi which used in India) or Pashto (Afghanistan). Even teh style of writing Arabic letters is different from the Arabian way.

Chinese-the Chinese letters were an invention of the First Imperor. They mean in every language the same. This letters where needed due to the many Ethnic groups with own language and dialects. Mandarin was supposed to be the "high language" (and mostly what you might learn as Chinese in courses).

oh no :( i believe english is hard too :P
but for slightly different reasons...
hehe... mine is mainly out of being told that it is :P from teachers at school etc.. they explained that it was due to it actually being a combination of so many other languages...
which you seem to back that up...
i think that thus, being a combo of other languages.. means that to truly understand the roots (origin) of the words, can sometimes be a little more confusing... but i am just purely speculating...
to me all languages seem difficult.. .even english... and its the only one i speak :P i think i should speak pictures ;)
also... i believe u are correct there :P most americans do not seem to know that the rest of the world is laughing at them from afar... due to the fact that they cannot understand words with greater than two syllables :P (sorry yanks... rash generalisation there)

polyglotical = 2 syllables huh? :P haha (just picking... hehe)

The "melting pot" language is English... there are many origins, and similar words can come from completely different base languages at times, making the origins and phonetics useful, but not always correct. This is one of the points made as to why English is a harder language -- we have rules for English, but many of the "borrowed" terms from other languages don't follow the rules. Thus, the WIDE array of sounds a SINGLE letter can make in English, versus usual SINGLE sounds to letters in other languages.

i think you have issues...i agree with those who says that english is the hardest language...because it really..it doesnt matter where it comes from..because all languages comes from another language...and as someone said what makes english so beautiful..is that it is made up of many different language including greek....not even english speaking people can understand english to it's full extent..there are so many variables in the language...and i dont think that ure reaction to his comment was necessary...it was just a simple belief..the same way u believe that greek is the best....the same way we believe that english is the best..and of course we all know whose right....and i dont know another language except the dialect of english, but in what other language has a word that has so many meanings or so many different type of words that are spelled the same, sound the same, and mean different things?

lane = lie (lie as not telling the truth)

lane = gender

back to the topic, I think arabic looks difficult. All I can c is straight lines with dots, not to mention its from right to left system.

Oh the right-to-left writing is not teh problem, not even the writing it self as it is very easy to learn and all is written as pronounced-but ther is the trouble. They do not write vowels, except in Quranic texts. And the grammar is quite hard. However learn talking first and then try to learn writing.

Hi Chris, I thought English is the easiest one. It only have three pronouns...He, She and it. Two of them are for human and last one is for everythign else...lol..lol.

Whereas in some language they use differet gender and pronouns for every obejct. For example, in some language Shoe is a female gender, so you use "she" for shoe while as mountains are of male gender you use "he" for them...and so on..:)

I agree with you on that point. BUT our spelling is so weired because of the many ways that our words come from. SO many languages have ENTERED ours that spelling is so illogical.
For instance
GHOTI (not a real word) but it can be pronounced quite legitimatly as though it were a common word lol!
I will tell you if you ask LOL

French is exactly like u said. U need to know the gender of objects in order to use correct pronoun. And the conjugation of verbs base on those pronouns is confusing.

For many reasons arabic is the hardest, first of all you have to know how to pronounce the letters of every single word and it all depends on the word before and the word after and maybe the first word of the sentence and the one after the word after, heh! Confused, eeh?
and every single letter in arabic can be pronounced in different ways well there are about 10 different pronunciations for every single letter of every single word and it all depends on our very complicated grammer, heh!
For Example The letter أ it can be pronounced like "A", "E" "AO" "E'" "ea" "E'A" "Aaa" ....etc.

i agree
i have been told numerous times by teachers etc that the most hard language to learn is english... due to it not really being a language as such, but more a bastardisation of alot of other languages...
and i definately agree anyone that can speak english as well as their own language, even if they dont speak english very well, they are very intelligent...
