The Philippine islands first came tothe attention
of Europeans with the Spanish expedition around the world led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. Magellan landed on the island of Cebu, claiming the lands for Spain and naming them Islas de San Lazaro.[15] He established friendly relations with some ofthelocal chieftain
and converted some of them to Roman Catholicism.[15] However, Magellan was killed in a dispute with indigenous tribal groups led by a chieftain named Lapu-Lapu.
The Philippine Archipelago
March 29, 1521 marked Magellan's discovery of Limasawa Island in Leyte where the first Christian mass was held. The rustic comforts of Limasawa provided the long overdue respite for the weary voyagers with the help of Magellan's loyal Malay slave, Enrique de Malacca. As Magellan's interpreter, he was responsible for introducing the sailors to the locals. Food was aplenty and the voyagers were rejuvenated after a week of badly needed rest
Decline of Spanish rule
Spanish rule on the Philippines was briefly interrupted in 1762, when British troops occupied Manila as a result of Spain's entry into the Seven Years' War. The Treaty of Paris of 1763 restored Spanish rule and in 1764 the British left the country fearing another costly war with Spain.
In 1781, Governor-General José Basco y Vargas established the Economic Society of Friends of the Country. The Philippines by this time was administered directly from Spain. Developments in and out of the country helped to bring new ideas to the Philippines. The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 cut travel time to Spain. This prompted the rise of the ilustrados, an enlightened Filipino upper class, since many young Filipinos were able to study in Europe.
Enlightened by the Propaganda Movement to the injustices of the Spanish colonial government and the "frailocracy", José Rizal, the most celebrated intellectual and radical illustrado of the era, wrote the novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, which greatly inspired the movement for independence.
Spanish rule in the Philippines, was founded by Andrés Bonifacio who became its Supremo (leader).
The Philippine Revolution began in 1896. Rizal was implicated in the outbreak of the revolution and executed for treason in 1896. The Katipunan in Cavite split into two groups, Magdiwang, led by Mariano Alvarez (a relative of Bonifacio's by marriage), and Magdalo, led by Emilio Aguinaldo. Leadership conflicts between Bonifacio and Aguinaldo culminated in the execution or assassination of the former by the latter's soldiers. Aguinaldo agreed to a truce with the Pact of Biak-na-Bato and Aguinaldo and his fellow revolutionaries were exiled to Hong Kong.
In 1898, as conflicts continued in the Philippines, the USS Maine, having been sent to Cuba because of U.S. concerns for the safety of its citizens during an ongoing Cuban revolution, exploded and sank in Havana harbor.
The Portuguese navigator and his men first set foot in Cebu on April l7, 1521 where their vessel was moored at the port of Cebu. Antonio Pigafetta, Magellan's chronicler, described the sights and nuances of early Cebuano culture: ";The houses were built with logs and had ladders made of wood and were roofed with nipa. Many sailing vessels from Siam (Thailand), China, and Arabia were docked at the port. The people ate from porcelain wares and used a lot of gold and jewelry for decoration of their bodies and clothing. Their wines were in Jars. Men tattooed their naked bodies covering their private parts with Bahagui and silk turbans were on their heads. About their girls, they were beautiful and almost as white and as large as our girls although naked from waist up. Upper class women wore sack-like blouses called Chambara on top of a square length cloth shirt tied tightly around the waist. The women painted their lips and nails with bright colors, adorned their bodies with jewelries, butallof them were barefoot.Philippine Tribal Tattoo Oct1,'073:19 PM

The Vanishing Body Art Of Ancient Filipinos
Tribal tattooing is slowly vanishing in many parts of the Philippines. Once a symbol of beauty, maturity, rank and bravery, knowledge of this ancient Filipino tradition of tribal tattoos is on the verge of being lost. The adoption and preference of modern Filipinos to western influences threatens tribal tattooing, a symbol of their once proud and unique culture
Tribal tattoo were so commonplace that the Spaniards dubbed the Visayan islands (where they first landed) “La Isla de los Pintados” (island of the painted ones). The pintados used small pieces of sharp metal which was first heated in fire. Elaborate designs are tattooed all over the body and only the hands and feet are left bear. Rubbing black powder made the tribal tattoo permanent. However, women tattooed only their hands.
The “Kankanay” of Benguet use a piece of wood with three iron points called “gisi”. Among tribes of the “Ibaloi” and “Kankanay”, tribal tattoo among males are rarely seen and are done only out of personal choice or whim. Women on the other hand, have their forearms (even up to the knuckles) tattooed with intricate designs
making the naturalcoloroftheskin.The“Ifugaos”
used a piece of iron with three points. Among its’ women, the use of leaf patterns, wavy lines and stars from the shoulder blades up to the back of the hand are common. Tattoo on the chest and abdomen are rare. They also use beaded necklaces and copper bracelets to further adorn themselves.
The “Kalinga” used five needles all at once. The males tattoo their arms, chest, back, shoulders and face elaborately. They base the patterns on the ornate design of the “silup” (upper garment) worn by the Northern Kalinga. The tribal tattoo is sported in place of the actual garment. The women of South Kalinga have the most ornately tattooed arms. They paint their faces orange and wearlong necklaces which are also wornlike a sash
The Chinese Experience in the Philippines
Over the centuries, the Philippines has become a melting pot of cultures. Malay stock mixed with Spanish and Japanese conquerors, Chinese traders and American liberators. But while they have all left their mark, the Spanish, Japanese and Americans have largely left, leaving the Chinese immigrants or Tsinoys as the largest identifiable ethnic/cultural group of foreign origin in the country today.
The Chinese influence grows strong in food, fashion, the arts, and virtually almost every aspect of modern Philippine culture. Add to this the fact that the majority of big businesses in the country like shopping malls, banks, hotels, and airlines are owned by the Chinese.
