What should I buy for 14 year old and a 16 year old niece
Please, give me some ideas here. They read voraciously, but they're getting bored with children's heroic fantasies!

Please suggest more, Marcon. I like your taste. Most 107 year olds are seriously out of touch with Young Adult fiction.
Here's another good one, maybe for kids a little younger: The Walls of Cartagena by Julia Durango. It's set in Cartagena de Indias in the 1600's. It deals with slavery, the inquisition, leprosy, and gives a glancing mention to the suppression of Galileo's writings. Oh, and it is pretty much in the setting of Pirates of the Caribbean.
Another neat one for teens is Hoot by Carl Hiassen. It's an ecological mystery-adventure set in a middle school (that feels a lot more like a high school). Hiassen's books are always funny, and generally include some kind of skullduggery by developers trying to sell out the landscape.
