Whether youâ€™re an actor, dancer, singer or model, itâ€™s important to remember that cultivating relationships with decision makers in the <a rel="nofollow" href="http://zorpia.com/mrjpcool/journals">entertainment industry</a> is paramount to career longevity. If a successful director takes a liking to you, that could mean steady work for you for years to come. So how do you make an impression on a director to help solidify your position and success in the industry? Here are a few tips: <ul><li>Try to memorize your lines before your first rehearsal. Thereâ€™s no better way to blow a director away than by showing him or her that youâ€™ve come prepared and ready to work. </li></ul> <ul><li>Always be on time (and preferably early.) I know I always stress this and you probably think I sound like a broken record, but in the entertainment industry time is money and thereâ€™s no such thing as being fashionably late. </li></ul> <ul><li>Come to rehearsal prepared to take notes. You can use a pencil to mark up your script or bring an extra notebook. Sometimes itâ€™s difficult to remember all of the notes that the director will give, or changes in blocking, so make sure you write them down. And be sure to review these notes often so that they sink in. </li></ul> <ul><li>Be courteous of the staff and crew during rehearsal. Unnecessary chatter can be frustrating and distracting to others in the <a rel="nofollow" href="http://talentresources.starsearchcasting.com/theaters_stage">theater</a>, so when youâ€™re not rehearsing one of your scenes, stay focused so youâ€™ll be ready to tackle your scene when itâ€™s your turn. </li></ul> One of the last rules of thumb is to always take great care of your costume and your props. Most costume directors will require that you leave your costume at the theater, however sometimes actors become absent-minded and may take a costume or prop home with them accidentally. I once had a friend who not only took a part of his costume home (a Starbucks apron) but also promptly lost it. He spent the next day driving to various Starbucks locations trying to buy an apron from one of the baristas. While it may sound like a funny story now - trust me - it was no laughing matter. However the man whoâ€™d led her to believe he was a photographer was actually a registered sex offender who lured Pandelios into the Angeles National Forest where he sexually assaulted and killed her. Kimberly was probably a lot like many young, <a href="http://starsearchcasting.com/member_updates.php">aspiring models</a>. She was beautiful, vibrant and eager to take on the world. Sheâ€™d had some success modeling swimwear and lingerie when sheâ€™d discovered a <a href="http://starsearchcasting.com/modeling_print_casting_calls_auditions">model-wanted ad</a> in a local weekly newspaper. She had hoped the opportunity would help her make some headway in her career. Instead, she met a tragic end. Unfortunately, this story is not an uncommon one. Linda Sobek, a former Raiders cheerleader and Playboy model met a similar fate when she left her home to attend a photo shoot. We often discuss the growing number of Internet scams that constantly target aspiring models, but one <a href="http://starsearchcasting.com/forums/index.php">Star Search Casting</a> member recently discussed the importance of remaining aware of the dangers that face models in the real world as well. Every day people reach out to aspiring models on the street, in stores, or through newspaper or online classifieds with legitimate offers. However, there are also criminals who use these same methods to lure models with malicious intent. We had so many talented participants last year and over 40% of them were hired for work! While I was blown away by how many really great <a target="_blank" href="http://www.starsearchcasting.com/search.php">actors, dancers, singers and models</a> there were â€“ I was really impressed to see how many people were multi-talented and had mastered more than one craft. In the entertainment industry, a "triple threat" refers to someone who can act, dance and sing well. Take the cast of High School Musical for example. It's a high energy production with an incredibly talented cast, many of whom had to act, dance and sing to land their roles.  While it's great to be a really good actor or a really great singer, you never know when the role of a lifetime will call for you to have more than one skill. It's important when you're preparing for a career in the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.starsearchcasting.com/forums/index.php?showforum=8">entertainment industry</a> that you are versatile and well-rounded. Learning to do several things rather than mastering just one skill can greatly increase your chances of booking really great roles. Many actors have a "Special Skills" category on their resume. While singing and dancing can be listed here, you can also include languages, dialects, sports, instruments, stunts or any other special skills you may have that make you unique. Having lots of talents can be really helpful when you're going after a role.  Often people are tempted to fudge this section of the resume, but this is a big DON'T. Instead, take advantage of classes or training in your area to pick up additional skills that will make you more marketable. Congratulations! But guess what? You've still got work to do. Your hard work has landed you a job, but now's the time to leverage your new role and get representation. Whether you'll be featured in a live stage, television or film production, it's important to get the word out to the people who can help you take your career to even greater heights. Now's the time to let agents and managers know that you're a bankable talent and you're ready to take the industry by storm. How do you do this? It's actually quite easy. Most people send mass mailings to agents and managers when they are looking for representation. You can apply the same principle when you've landed a role. Sending a simple postcard to announce your new role to agents and managers can greatly improve your odds of getting representation, compared to simply sending a headshot and a cover letter that may or may not be opened or given substantial consideration.  The front of the postcard should be a full color headshot with your name and the role you're appearing in. On the back, you can include more information about yourself and about your new role. Be sure the info is short and concise and that your photo is engaging. If it's a live performance, invite the agent or manager to attend. If it's a television or film role, invite them to tune in or check it out.  Be advised that the manager or agent will probably not come to your live performance. However, what's most important is that they 1) See your face, and identify you as someone they may want to work with, 2) See that you're able to book work, and that a relationship with you could be a profitable one and 3) Call you to schedule an appointment for you to come in and meet with them.
