I've traveled all over the U.S., and been overseas to 15 different countries.... The first question I'm asked is: "Where are you from? I respond with America or California! When I'm in the U.S. the normal response is California, then they respond with "No! Where did you come from?" I answer the same! California, I was born in California!.. or if I'm overseas, I say the U.S., or California... Then the real question is asked... What is your Nationality? I'm of a mixed race... my mother is Hispanic and my dad is Asian... My dad was born in Hawaii and my mother was born in Palm Springs, California.. That response is not good enough for these knuckle heads! They want more info... as in, they what more specifics, as in where are my parents from?... My dad is Japanese, born in Hawaii... My mother is Mexican, born in California!!! Response I get is.... So, you're Japanese!!!! I'm an American or a Califor - NAIN!!! Here are a couple of ignorant things told to me in the past.... -- So, you're Japanese, I'm sure you would like to visit your home country!! (As in Japan) -- While I was doing my laundry at a laundry-mat., a man gave me a menu for his restaurant he just opened.. He asked me what my nationalty was? I said "Japanese" he stormed off as if I insulted him., this lady asked him, what's wrong? He said! "He's a Jap, they bombed Pearl Harbor!!! -- At work this one female asked the same thing, where you from? I tell her I'm from California... Anyway, this woman was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana - she looked me right in the eyes and said: "you're so cute, you can speak English very well!" I responded with... "ahhh, well, I was born in California..." My mom and dad where born in the U.S... but she insisted that it was so cute that I was so American-ized! I attempted to tell this ignorant bitch, if I was born in the U.S., how could I become American-ized, when I was born an American!! but got the deer in the headlight look.. Traveling overseas.. It's the same or even worse.. I've been denied going into certain places in Asia, based on being an American... I've been to overseas countries were they are so happy that I'm an American, but will introduce me as someone from Japan or some Chinese dude.. Life sucks... I've also been to Japan... I'm considered an American or something more sinister... They are not too receptive to to those that look Japanese and cannot speak the language... Thailand is the best place I've ever been... But they have issues as well... They think I'm Thai, which is good and bad. Apparently Thai men are not looked upon greatly by the Thai society in general. I've been denied going into certain establishments for looking Thai, but once I pull out the passport then there is no problem, but were back to the same crap, where are you from, dude I just showed you my American passport, I'm from the U.S!!!! he responds with, but you don't look American.. Anyway, once they're past the infatuation that I can speak english, I'm just another tourist. In conclusion - It seems like I'm not accepted any where for just being me!! I need to wear costume that looks like an American Express Card, cuz aren't they accepted by more businesses and places than any other? |
