Friday,May 4 2007, 07:25:53 PM*****Dilys, my wife, has JUST BEEN ELECTED .......
a borough councillor, as the second Green Party member for Scarborough.
Dear all,
Wonderful news, everyone, after trying to get elected since 1989, today Dilys finally made it. I am so proud of her.
Last May, Jonathan Dixon, our friend, was the first ever Green Party member to be elected to the Scarborough Council, in our ward (Stepney) in a by-election. The ward is a 2 seat ward, and this year Jonathan won his seat with an increased vote of 670, Dilys came second with 477 votes. The next was the Conservative with 313, Liberal Democrats were next 234, then the Labour Party Councillor (who lost this seat) came next with 206 votes. There were two others who got fewer votes.
In Scarborough as a whole the Green Party did BETTER than ever before. We had 13 candidates,
All got over 10% of the vote. but only one other came close to winning, he lost by only 24 votes.
One other Green got over 500 votes in his ward, but was over 80 votes behind the one above. My vote was one of the lowest, but still fairly commendable (179 Votes).
In the whole of England Greens picked up many more seats. In Brighton they doubled their seats from 6 to 12, In Norwich City they now have 10 seats. There were other good wins as well..
The national news seems to avoid mentioning the Green Party. It is surprising how much influence just a few Greens can have on councils, in getting them to run the councils in a more environmentally secure way, AND SAVE people money!
Councilors who are not Green Party members, but from other Parties, actually look up to Jonathan Dixon for guiding them in the right way. He has been there only one year, and has already persuaded the council to use "Fair Trade" foods etc.
Green Party Politics is about making life better for everyone.
Anyway I thought you'd like to know.
I hope you are all doing fine, sorry this is a general letter, but you will understand that We have both been VERY busy these last few weeks.
Love Peace
