Friday,Jan 1 2010, 08:58:37 AMWhen Does a new year start?
How did January 1st became the first day of the year. According to the Roman calendar, March 1st was the 1st day of the year. Traditionally, the Roman calendar began the first day of March. However, it was in January (the eleventh month) when the consuls of ancient Rome assumed the government. Julius Caesar, in 47 BC, changed the system, creating the Julian calendar. It was modified in the time of Mark Antony consul in 44 BC, again by the emperor Augustus Caesar in 8 BC and finally by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, which brought the calendar to its present day form. This year begins on January 1. Subsequently, this day was marked with a religious significance during the Middle Ages and later centuries./ In the Eastern Orthodox Church the new year is January 14th. According to the Chinese, it "occurs every year on the new moon of the first lunar month, about four to eight weeks before spring." It is also referred to as the Lunar New Year. The Lunar New Year is also used in Japan, Korea, Tibet, Vietnam, and Cambodia. /The exact date can fall anytime between 21 January and 21 February (inclusive) of the Gregorian Calendar./ Here are a few more new years. * /Islamic New Year --- This may be the only major new year celebration that is based on a purely lunar calendar/ * /Rosh Hashanah --- In the Jewish tradition, Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on the 29th day of the month of Elul/ * /Thai New Year (Songkran) --- Although the traditional Thai calendar is also lunisolar, Songkran is determined on a purely solar basis/ * /Tsagaan Sar, Mongolian lunisolar new year/ * /Sinhala and Tamil new year celebrated in Sri Lanka coincides with Thai New Year. It is based on an astrological event within lunisolar calendar/ * /Ugadi & Gudi Padwa --- This is the New Year's Day for the Deccan people of India, who also use a lunisolar calendar/ The Wikipedia link (below) lists all the different "new years" by month of the year. My friend Miriam Phillips, (BUT no relation!) said she wanted a world of nonsense So I quickly wrote this little verse for her NONSENSE In your world of nonsense, That which is now light Would become more dense. With the sun shining at night. Jokes would be serious; Works of classy art, Clearly mysterious, Now become too smart. Nothing is no more sane Past and future is now; And flowing in the Seine, A dry dog says meow! © Chris Phillips 2 Nov 2009 ! Slightly rewritten from
