Muslims now outnumber Catholics, making Islam the single biggest religion in the world, the Vatican has said.

More than 19 per cent of the world's people followed Islam, said Monsignor Vittorio Formenti, who compiled the Vatican's 2008 world statistics book.

Catholics amount to 17.4 per cent of the global population.

'For the first time in history, we are no longer at the top – the Muslims have overtaken us,' Monsignor Formenti told a Vatican newspaper.

He added that if all Christian groups were considered, including Orthodox churches, Anglicans and Protestants, Christians made up 33 per cent of the world's population.

The global population surpasses 6.6billion and, according to 2006 Church figures, there are up to 1.13billion Catholics in the world. Muslims number 1.3billion people, estimates suggest.

The number of followers was rising so fast because of higher birth rates in ­Islamic countries, said Monsignor Formenti, while the Catholic proportion of the world's population was fairly stable.

The official said the data on Muslim populations had been compiled by each individual country and then released in a report by the UN.
