The night speaks its own language.
The full moon blushes out from behind the smoke of clouds, giving me a one last glimpse of its cold light. Somewhere distant, maybe a mile away a dog barks. The dry leaves flow down towards the village, rustling, carried forward by the wind. An owl hoots somewhere deep into the woods, warning me. “Don’t come in here, its dark. It’s waiting for you.” Then for a moment, all I hear is silence. No insects chirping, now owl hooting, the wind has fallen asleep and somebody has even told that goddamn dog to shut up. Now, all I hear is the sound of silence.
A flash of lightning rips across the sky and I see a signboard that reads, ‘Sunflower Village’, and then I wait to hear the thunder follow. I wait; wait, and wait but I never hear the thunder, not even a slight rumble. A trickle of sweat slides down from my neck going on further below from between my chests to my stomach and then enters right into my navel. I look back and see the dirt road disappearing into the dark mouth of the woods. The horse carriage, that had brought me to the ‘foot’ of this village, is long gone. I look ahead, again, to the road sloping down, going towards the village. I pick up my bag and start walking.
The road is very dark and there is no light coming from down the village. Ahh! The flashlight! A last minute item that I had decided to put in my bag just before I locked my apartment door. Still walking, I unzip the bag’s side chain and reach out for the flashlight. A mosquito bites me on the left side of my neck and I jerk my hand out of the bag and smack it hard on the place where I felt the bite hoping that sucker wasn’t carrying malaria or some kind of shit.
I again slip in my hand in the bag’s side pocket and drag out the flashlight. I switch it on and point it down towards the road. God bless the man who invented flashlig…
“Oh shit!”
I stumble on a piece of rock butting out of the dirt road and fall face-forward on the ground. ‘Another one bites the dust.’ The band Queen sings in my mind and I taste a mixture of dirt and blood in my mouth. My lower lip starts stinging and I look up to see the flashlight, still ON and rolling down the sloping road towards the village, its light bouncing around the left side of the road before hitting that small rock. I hear the sound of the glass of the flashlight breaking and then there is darkness again. The skin around my right elbow burns and I know there will be some bruises to show when I reach a source of light.
I push myself up again on my feet cursing every man that was ever born, brushing off the dirt from my clothes. Thanks for nothing to Bill who had suggested Sunflower Village was a good place to write a book. That guy needs therapy and a nice kick in the butt. Jesus! The laptop! Will have to wait until I reach the village to find out if it is still working or not. I definitely did not plan to write a five hundred-page novel in long hand. If the laptop’s messed up I’ll just have to pack up my things and be off to the city again (Ha ha the joke’s on me).
Finally back to normal, I start walking again, slowly, one-step at a time (No flashlight! Remember?). So much for a peaceful and rejuvenating trip to the village, I bet, my one bedroom jam-packed apartment is a better place to write than this.
A branch snaps and I look back, my heart starts beating so loudly that I can hear the Thud! Thud! Sound in my ears. All I see is the darkness. I look up and see the dark sky, no moon or stars visible. All of them hiding behind those dark clouds that seemed to be carrying fresh water from the oceans, but still hadn’t decided on bursting out the water on Sunflower village. I look ahead again and start nearly running towards the village. There is a turn ahead on the road but I do not notice it until its too late.
The ground beneath me disappears and I fall. I keep on falling, falling into the darkness. The temperature around me is rising but my body feels very cold. The contents in my stomach are jumping up and down in my throat trying to escape from my mouth. Later, my body gets adjusted to this ill situation and my stomach seems to be somewhat all right. Minutes pass by to hours. Hours pass by to days. Days pass by to weeks, weeks pass by to months, months pass by to years, and years pass by to decades and so on. However, after two hundred and fifty thousand millenniums I am still falling. Not even God knows why I ain’t still dead.
I have no way to kill myself and I still keep on falling and falling into the darkness. Maybe I fell into a black hole situated right here on the earth. Fell into a black hole that they forgot to discover and forgot to mention in the encyclopedia, and in those scary stories that people wrote. Sleep doesn’t come nor do I feel hungry. I don’t know if my heart still beats or if I am still breathing but all I know is that I am alive and living this cursed life in the darkest hole of hell.

Falling.
Oh, God please kill me.
