A Story About Typhoon Ondoy

Copied from a friend's journal...

Let me warn you. This is a long read. Sorry, it's not my best writing, but hopefully it gets the idea across. this is the synopsis of what went down.

First off, our family would like to thank the boys of the Ateneo Rowing Team. It was through their efforts that we were able to reach (and provide food and drinks to) our stranded grandparents and cousins in Provident Village.

Now, on to the story of the longest night of my life.

My grandparents, cousin, and uncle all live in Provident Village. Yes, that is the village you have probably been hearing about all day. My cousin and grandparent's houses are in one little compound, while my uncle and his family live a couple of blocks away.

At 5pm yesterday, my mom started panicking, saying something about one of the household help at my aunt's house almost drowning. Knowing that our grandparents cannot swim, nor could they possibly survive long in the cold should they decide to go up to the roof, spurred me and my sister into action. We gathered towels, put our cellphones and cash into Ziplock bags, donned swimsuits and boardshorts under our windbreakers and zoomed to Robinson's Galleria to buy rafts. With us were 2 of our drivers, Mang Lito and Mang Caloy, and our day-shift guard, Mang Barnobal. We took two SUVs with us in the hopes of getting further in the flood. We managed to buy 3 inflatable rafts from Toys R Us, and had them inflated on the spot. Then off we drove to Marikina.

The idea at that time was to row at the very least, our grandparents to safety, as at the time, water levels were still rising. Aurora was clogged when we got there. The water had reached near the end of the flyover. The sight probably alarmed the heck out of Mang Caloy. He asked my sister to take the wheel, and he and Mang Barnobal would go ahead and try to extract my grandparents. After parking, Mang lito followed into the fray a few minutes later.
We sat and waited in the car for about two hours, text-ing our stranded family members and hoping and praying that the drivers made it. At 7pm, Mang Barnobal returned alone. Caloy was at the "shore" with the rafts. They could not row past the Loyola cemetery. The current there was too strong. Question was, where was Mang Lito? They had not seen him. It was pitch-black on the street and there were panicky people, ususeras, and media everywhere.

At around 8pm, my cousin, Nico and his dad managed to find us amid the confusion. My mom texted me that 4 members of the Ateneo rowing team were on their way with my brother. They detoured to La Mesa Dam to get their oars and life vests and got to us fully-equipped and supplied with food and drink at around 10pm. By that time, Mang Lito had finally managed to get back. He had made it as far as the gate of Provident Village but could not go in because of the current.

We saw 2 rescue boats from the Army being deployed. An hour and a half later, we saw one of them being towed back. It had gotten punctured. WOW. GALING ("great", however sarcastically put). Baka hindi government-issue. (Maybe it's not government issue.)

I only managed to snap one photo using my phone as I was conserving battery. Here's my brother as we were preparing the rafts for attempt number 2.

The rafts we had were too small, so only my brother and one of the boys were able to fit. My sister went along to make sure they didn't take any unnecessary risks. The rest of the boys helped us lug the stuff all the way to waist-high water. Yes, people I waded into waist-high floodwater. Deadma na the stuff floating around. There was poop. And other stuff.

at 12mn, one of the boys came back with a cut on his leg. Now, I had heard of someone dying of leptospirosis contracted by through floodwater with an open wound. So i got kind of paranoid, and decided to take him to the nearest "Emergency Command Post" set up by the government. We had heard on the radio that we could get medical help there. So we made the 2-block walk and found... nothing. There wasn't a fist aid kit in sight. the "Command Post" was just the site where PGMA and Mayor Fernando had a press con. Boy was i pissed. The Officials there were no help. They couldn't even point us to a working faucet. We ended washing the cut up using soap bought from a Petron Convenience Store. :(

by around 2am, the entire group came back. :) happily no one was hurt. Only 1 of 3 rafts made it back though, so all three of our heroes had to squeeze into one raft. 1 raft got punctured by a fallen twig, and Enc applied pressure on it unknowingly. Poof went the first raft. Not Long after, the other raft got punctured by Victoria. She accidentally sat on her partially sheathed cutter. ahahahahah! At least the night was good for some laughs.

here's Victoria's part of the story. what happened from 12mn-2am.

We walked a-ways into the main thoroughfare to conserve energy. we had to careful not to tread on nails. Lots of people were trying to make their way into the city as well. water began from ankle deep fro the flyover to waist deep near Honda. Funny thing, the Filipino. When we deployed, I guess, being a woman, men caught sight of us and started singing cheesy love songs. The flipside of it was we were subjected to a lot of hate. "Pang-mayaman lang yang raft!" (Rafts are for the rich!) and other such nonsense. The currents were pretty strong in the alleys perpendicular to the main thoroughfare. So we had to negotiate those.
Thank God electricity was cut off, because there wires hanging loose and quite close to us. There was a Ford Explorer, L300 van, and other vehicles upturned and on their sides, and in odd angles with wheels sticking out of the water. It was pretty obvious that the owners abandoned them in their haste to escape. When we got into the village we negotiated the rapids, and got stuck in between two cars, and had to sort of wiggle our little crafts through with our hands.
It was pitch-black in the village, so we finally turned on the emergency lights. People started shouting at us to save the kids in Geneva St., well that was we were headed anyway. We tried to negotiate floating debris, one of which was a corpse of an old lady (enc only told me that he had seen her after we'd gotten to terra firma so as not to freak me out). We saw a pregnant girl in a tree, but could not help her because we had by that time punctured our rafts. Made it to our grandparent's house and fed them all. Thank heavens everyone was safe and dry, the Magnus family joined them. Enc had to climb up the framework of the awning to get food and water in. afterwards he tried to patch up one of the rafts. right then we had to make a decision. We had to decide whether or not to proceed to the other street to get to our cousin and aunt. But the raft was beyond repair and we had to turn back.
On our way back, near the main entrance to provident village, we were down to 1 raft. three people in one small orange raft. we had lifevests so i guess the people thought we were professionals. They wailed for us to save them. There was one person who even threatened us, "Tangina may baril ako abot ko kayo." (swear word, I have a gun and I can reach you with it!)

After which we reached the main thoroughfare and waded our way back to the rally point.

Margaret:
As they waded back, then they saw the army mobilizing to go in. Palang (Only now). At 2am. Naunahan sila ng 3 civilians (Beaten by 3 civilians). In kiddie rafts. Grabe (It's too much). Kaloka (Makes me crazy). Army rescue EPIC FAIL. I have asymptoting to ZERO respect for the government now.

We got home at 3am. Tired, dirty, but feeling better knowing our grandparents were fed and watered.
The story of our rescue is not over. We are on our way back to Marikina to help our family and whoever else we can. :)
Friends, the extent of the damage is huge. whatever help you can afford to extend, please please do.
AdMU needs volunteers. Our shop in the Peninsula will be open for drop off of relief goods on Tuesday. :) Clothes, canned food, bread... ANYTHING can help. Will forward it to AdMU.
thanks so very very much.

UPDATE: ATENEO IS ACCEPTING DONATIONS FOR THE VICTIMS OF STORM ONDOY, PREFERABLY COOKED OR READY-TO-EAT FOOD, CLOTHES, MEDICINE, BLANKETS, AND WATER.
Typhoon Ondoy

Manila has had it's share of floods (baha, as they are known) but never before has the city seen anything like this. This very latest tropical depression (international name Ketsana, nicknamed "Ondoy" did more damage to my own country than I had ever seen. Houses, cars, walls, everything was swept away in one quick flash flood. Parts that were never flooded before were washed away by flooding. I heard of one TV anchor who was stuck on the second story of his house for 10 hours who said it had never flooded in his area before, and he had lived there for 7 years. A lot of people think this storm will Zero Out many people's life savings. I am lucky enough to live in an apartment complex, however that doesn't mean all people in apartment complexes were spared. Many basement parking structures were filled with water to the very top, ruining many cars. Here are some photos i've collected from friends, and a video I shot outside my apartment.

Superman Returns (2006) - 2/5

What sort of introduction do you give to the most anticipated movie of the year? Superman Returns has finally hit theatres this week and I was determined to be the first one to watch it. I was struck in awe during the beginning credits of the film! They used the exact same font from the earlier series. I was surprised at how well they made this film into a tribute. I had expected nothing less, especially with the character and plot of our most beloved superhero, Superman.

The trend for superheroes has awakened these past few years. We've seen "The Hulk", "Batman Begins", "Fantastic Four", "X-Men I, II & III", "Spiderman I, II (and soon III)", finally now "Superman Returns" and I hear they're currently working on a spin-off script for a solo "Wolverine" movie. Each movie is testing the limits of what we can create on new technologies, something we didn't have 20 years ago. Back then, we were still awestruck by editing magic and cheap special effects. Now, we know different.

So, with that in mind, we naturally expect the same awe and amazement from Mr. Singer, especially with what he has done for the X-Men Series. Superman is iconic, and he brings this meaning to a new level. There has been a lot of talk about how he has a lot of Superman's scenes in a Christ-like stance, arms outstretched... I believe this is Singer's feeble attempt at a "Spielberg". Hes focuses all of your energy on the symbol of Superman... and you get lost in it. So this just adds more to the the "tribute" power... you're basically reminded of the idea of Superman being such a hero over and over again. The plot might come secondary for some viewers (or should I say, some "directors"), yet for me, I found that I needed a break from all the hero-worship. I needed to hear some great lines. Which is what I got, in a sense...

Singer doesn't cease to amaze me with his ability to tribute. This guy actually re-used some of the lines from the original films in his new one: "I hope this doesn't put any of you off flying... I mean, statistically speaking it's still the safest way to travel" ... "It's a bird. No it's a plane. No, it's..." ... which only adds more to this tribute power.

Moreover, Roger Ebert's review in the Chicago Sun Times echoes in my ears when he describes the film as "a glum, lackluster movie in which even the big effects sequences seem dutiful instead of exhilarating." Which is dead on. We can make special effects with just about anyone being Superman and [saints be praised] we see this in the film. However, as I said earlier, we know better. We want more.

So what is to become of this film? It is a complete question mark. If that question mark labels the film, i'm horrified to think that the Superman plot will not turn into the Bond/Batman storyline we see refreshed every 10 years or so. Do I love it? Do I hate it? Either could be said about the film, which is why I think i'll need a second opinion. I'd like to see what we can do with this storyline. The time for tributes is necessary, but as soon as the lights flicker back on, you find that it's dead. I couldn't wait for the movie to come out. I had prayed and wished that they didn't change a damn thing, and that everything I saw as a kid would come back to the screen and awe me again... but then again, be careful of what you wish for.

Welcome back, Superman! =)

(Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey)

Lucky Number Slevin (2006) - 2/5

This is a who-dunnit film with lots of twists and turns. The plot however, is a little predictable.
From
IMDB.COM: A case of mistaken identity lands Slevin (Josh Hartnett) into
the middle of a war being plotted by two of the city's most rival crime
bosses: The Rabbi (Ben Kingsley) and The Boss (Morgan Freeman). Slevin
is under constant surveillance by relentless Detective Brikowski
(Stanley Tucci) as well as the infamous assassin Goodkat (Bruce Willis)
and finds himself having to hatch his own ingenious plot to get them
before they get him.

We begin the movie with Mr. Goodkat (Bruce
Willis) character killing off a low life who owes the two mobsters
money. Twenty years ago, these 2 mobsters (at the time, they worked
together) killed a family man who owed money to them. That connects
with the story later on. The flashback at the beginning of the movie is
what really killed it for me, although I don't see how they would've
been able to stick in that information anywhere else. We see the family
man getting killed and a set-up for the murder of his wife and kid.
Naturally, the kid's important, and I assumed it was Josh Hartnett's
character. The big twist at the end of the movie was that it WAS him.

The
only twist I can actually say was a real twist was the cop, Stanley
Tucci's character. He apparently used to work for the two mobsters and
was the trigger man for Slevin's mother's murder. So he gets killed in
the end too. However, the plot only entered his involvement fully at
the flashback at the end. It could've been left open-ended. His
character could've lived.

All in all, the entire film was just
a confusing array of words. Using quaint differences in the meanings of
what people just naturally say out of expression, the movie is supposed
to be giving us a real show... something I can only model against the
"Wildthings" Series and "The Usual Suspects".

However, this film does not begin to cut the cheese.

The
characters were predictable, and the story-lines were forgettable.
Hence, I made my own conclusions about the plot and end of the film,
and they were right. Slevin was never his real name and his real
identity, being that of the little boy, was something I thought any
viewer would just naturally pick up on. The building up of that twist,
I think, was horribly done. They only made the connection between the
two mobsters and the kid's story at the end, when Slevin reveals he was
that kid.

The real pain in the arse of this movie is that you
have to remember every little detail so that the full twist can be
battered on you at the very end. It takes more than 2 minutes for some
random cop to talk about the entire twist in it, explaining it to
Tucci, just before his character dies. I was lost in some parts of the
movie, and the twists got confusing after a while. The point of the
flashback in the beginning, although meant to relay information that
sets the tone for the film, reveals the entire motive for our main
character. The catch 22 of it is that the so-called "twist" at the end
would have absolutely [right now, it has a very small, faint and weak]
no meaning whatsoever.

What's worse, the production company
couldn't even give Bruce a better role, they probably just hired him
for the name branding. He has less than 5 pages of lines and has maybe
17 minutes of screen time total in the entire film. His character
supposedly helped the boy exact his revenge. He was the "specialist"
that was brought in to kill the kid, however he couldn't do it so he
took the boy in. Another tidbit saved for the final 5 minutes of the
film.

Lastly, I would like to comment on Lucy Lui's character.
She had to "die" in the film and come back to life so that Mr.
Goodkat's character could pull off that line, "I understood." with the
accompanying flashback. Fine, i'll swallow that. But the coincedence
that she works in the morgue and is helping Slevin is just another knot
that, I think, the writter put in to see if he could add just a few
dozen more twists to this knot.

Both thumbs down, however, it's
a good time-killer. Some of the SCENES are good and the situations that
Slevin gets into are a bit laughable.

(Josh Hartnett, Bruce Willis, Lucy Liu, Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley, Stanley Tucci)

The movie starts with Rebecca (Jenny McCarthy, "BASEketball", "Scream 3") walking into her boyfriend Richard having sex with another girl. Watch her hilarious hi-jinx as Rebecca tries to exact revenge with her ex, only to mess up each plan and get herself into the most embarrassing situations that any woman could ever possibly dream of having. All this with the help of her three friends friends: Michelle (Carmen Electra, "Scary Movie 4", "Date Movie"), an average caucasian woman trying desperately trying to be black, Carrie (Kam Heskin, "Pride and Prejudice", "Catch Me If You Can"), a completely horrible actress who gets roles using her feminine wilds and John (Eddie Kaye Thomas, "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle", American Pie Series), who's been her best friend for years and is secretly in love with her. Will Rebecca do the right thing and end up with John? or will she succeed in scoring revenge on her ex?

I really enjoy smaller projects like this because they can stay on track. Since the project has a lot less money, then the project is all carried by the writing and the acting. I love the fact that the show was written by Jenny, since I really couldnt think of anyone who's got more experience in the field of relationships. Eddie Kaye Thomas (American Pie series) was a "safe" choice for the lovable geek, but there are no need to take risks on a project this small. I enjoyed Carmen Elektra's character Michelle, something quite "in-your-face" enough to strike my interests. I wonder if Jenny has an actual friend like that.

The movie has a "hiccup of a twist" at the end and I seriously think the whole movie is worth it because of it (sorry, I won't spoil it for you). Rebecca eventually learns the hard lessons of love and break-up, something either gender can relate to, not just women (although I HIGHLY recommend this film for women everywhere). A laugh riot through and through, this movie is a must-own, and will not disappoint.

(Jenny McCarthy, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Carmen Electra, Victor Webster, Kam Heskin)

Remington Steele (1982-1987) - 2/5

I have just spent the last few weeks reviewing this incredibly old show. I tried to figure out why it was on for so long, without addressing the fact that the show had always felt second rate. In fact, my sister felt the exact same way when I called her the other week and told her what I was up to. "Remington Steele? Eh ang panget nun! I didn't like watching that when I was younger, no nevermind." (something like that, I forget what we were talking about)

Ive come to the conclusion that there really was nothing wrong with the show. After reaching the 2nd season, the show finally came into its own. Well, as much as it could. It was never about the chemistry between the two actors, although this is what the show had intended to exploit. We just LOVED seeing Laura and Mr. Steele getting into the goos stuff about their relationship only to be foiled by some event that happens for the case. So there we were, being led on for 5 years while these two solved some of the most "baffling cases"

I mentioned earlier that the show's success was about the chemistry around our characters. Correct. What I believe carried the show for song was the Brosnan pout. It was full on during the first season, and toned down by the 2nd. You'll only notice it if you watch the entire show in a few days. Moreover, I absolutely hated Stephanie Zimbalist's character AND acting. She kinda seemed arrogant, kinda meloncholy for a time before the 80's. It seems as if no one wanted to live in the 80s. Not even fake people! Pierce ended up carrying her for 5 years when the show eventually ended.

The show's great on DVD though. Extremely formulaic, cars that topple over and of COURSE blow up, every case being an old plot stolen from the movies, and of course the brosnan pout. The real mystery as to why I bought the damn thing was to find out Mr. Steele's real name. But by the end of the 2nd season, I had had enough of Ms. Zimbalist and her weak backbone. I thought the 80's were the actual implementation of Women's Lib however it seemed as if flings with the boss and careless attitudes were at the height of social tolerance. Bad form Ms. Holt, bad form. I did enjoy the character Mildred Krebbs, however I am not a fan of Doris Robert's acting (I actually hated Ray -- sorry folks!)

(Pierce Brosnan, Stephanie Zimbalist, Doris Roberts 1982-1987)

DZ's Letter

SUBJECT: Is this equal to 5 days in an Opium bar in China?

Yo twat up chong!

Right now I'm in Syntagma Square in Athens Greece. Yesterday when I touched down in Athens from Bangkok after a 10 hour flight I kicked it at the airport til 9:30 am. Landed at 7am. Took the metro to Syntagma square and met some guy who said he ran a youth hostel and I could get a bed for 10 Euros. Which is super cheap considering most other hostels charge 20 euros and the cheapest hotel rooms are like 35 euros. I checked in and there was no one else in the dorm room so I had the whole room to myself with a balcony.

I finished my book i was reading and crashed out for a bit because I didn't get too much sleep on the flight. Woke up and headed out and hit the streets. I saw some ancient Greek ruins and such and wandered around from 7pm til 12. It took me 2 hours to find where the hell my hotel room was. I finally had to ask a restaurant owner and a cop where it was. It was just down the street. I was walking in circles for an hour and knew I was close but couldn't find it. There was even a party I was going to go to, but I wanted to put on some shoes and it took forever to find my hotel so I just crashed out.

Today walked around and got lost trying to find the National Archaelogical Museum, but found the war museum instead and took pics of some old war planes and missles. Too hot so I bought some beer and hit the internet cafe. So here I am. This isn't the part that's equivalent to 5 nights in an opium bar.

This part is....?

Well Thailand was the craziest EVER. Spent some time in Bangkok and then headed to Ko Tao and did some diving. I did my advanced open water and BK did his open water. I dove 30 meters (100 ft) and did a night dive and saw some glow in the dark plankton. We met some kewl Aussies, Irish chick, English chick, Brazilian guy and a group of canadiens.

After we headed to Koh Phangan to Hadd Rin Nok beach where the full moon party is at. You know Koh Phangan like in the movie The Beach. I thought Boracay was the craziest beach party, but the full moon party is 8000 people raving on a white sand beach....and thats during low season...high season its like 15,000. Well I was planning to go to Ko Phi Phi Don where they actually filmed the movie but I got caught up in some shit.

2 days before the full moon party me, BK and two Irish doods were schmoking on a rock on the beach. Not to mention I dropped some X right before this. We thought we were going to schmoke in their Bungalow, but they said just the rock. It was windy and bad conditions and I rolled a horrible jay that didn't even schmoke. Impossible right? But anyways we were there just chilling when some Thai plain clothes cops came and searched us. They found the weezy on me and put handcuffs on me and arrested my ass. I tried to bribe them with my camera and 30,000 baht. $1=37baht. but they said the next morning at 11am. So I spent the night in Thai jail chain smoking a pack and a half with two Thai guys from Koh Samui who got busted for breaking into bungalows and stealing peoples shit.

The next day BK came at 10:30 and tried to get me out, but the cops said at 1pm. 1 o'clock came by and they said not til 3 or 4. Finally a translater, Chipy, came in and BK talked to him. He told BK that I'd have to go to Ko Samui jail til my case came up. I did NOT want to go to Thai jail so BK kept on talking. Finally he said 30,000 baht for bail but another 70,000 baht to bribe immigration. Because if we didn't bribe immigration, after my hearing I'd have to spend the rest of my time in Thai Jail til my flight back to the states. Which wouldn't have worked because my ticket was going to greece. Plus immigration would put some restriction on my passport and I wouldn't be let into another country anyways. So BK borrowed money against his credit card and got the 100,000 baht to bail my ass out and bribe immigration.

Even after I got out it was still on the back of my mind the whole time til I went to court. Because the Thai Police could do anything they wanted and send my ass to jail anyways even though I paid all that money. It was funny when I got out how many people knew. After I was out me and BK were going to pick up our laundry and this girl I didn't even recognize said, "OH so you got out huh?" I just said yeah and kept walking. I guess she saw my ass in jail, but I didn't see her because I didn't want to make eye contact with anyone in there. And even that night when I went out and would introduce myself to a friends friend they even knew. I'd say, "oh hi my name is Vince...what's ur name?" And they'd respond..."My name is ____ and I KNOW all about you" Infamous!!.

Even at the full moon party after staying up all night I saw this couple from Thai Jail. An AUSSIE GUY and a Swedish girl. They were in there gettting they're things back because they guys I was in the cell with stole they're things. At first they told me they thought I stole they're shit, but then saw my passport and felt bad. They told me they talked about me alot after that and hoped I'd gotten out. So anyways partied with them for awhile on the beach.

After the full moon party we moved to a different beach to Haad Yuan and it was super chill. It was kewl to drink and SCHMOKE and we could get weezy, shrooms, drank, and food from the bar. Even so I was still tripping about goign to court. Finally went to court and everything worked out ok. I was there with this English guy Sam who had gotten busted too and we went to the holding cell and our hearing together. We got fined 1000 baht each and got our passports back.

But even though I had my passport back I was still tripping balls at the airport everytime I had to show my passport because I thought that any second Thai Royal Police would come and arrest my ass. It didn't help either that at all the book shops there were books about people who went to THai Jail and how horrible it was. This Aussie guy who got busted for Heroin smuggling wrote a book and talked about the first day there the guard made a Swedish guy jack off in front of 100 inmates. And another story about how a french guy in the cell next to him was screaming inhumanly all night and the guard didn't give a fawk. Finally the guard let them check on him and when they saw him he had a huge lump that moved on his neck. When they cut it open with a razor blade it was full of maggots. A cockroach had crawled into his ear and laid eggs.

I had a great time in Thailand drinking, schmoking, shrooming, smoking, meeting new people, jumping off rocks, swimming, banging chicks, ring of fire, going to white sand beachs, checking out all the hot topless european chicks, but I'm glad I got the HELL out of HELL.

So if that doesn't equal 5 days in an opium bar in China I don't know what does and I'm sure not going to try and equal it. I don't know if it can get any crazier, but hopefully if it does only in a GOOD way. I've been saying that for the last 3.5 months and it just does. Probably going to hit the Greek Isles after Athens then hit up Amsterdam and Barcelona (Ibiza maybe??) but not in any specific order.

Hope things are well in the PI and say wassup to everyone out there. And oh yeah smoke a PHATTY BOMBATTY for me, because I will definetly do that in Amsterdam. Peece out.

One Love,
